Senior Education Director

PURPOSE
The Senior Education Director is a visionary and strategic leader overseeing all educational programs and initiatives at Tlingit & Haida. This individual plays a pivotal role in shaping the organization's educational direction, ensuring high-quality program delivery, and driving measurable impact. With guidance from the Division and Executive leadership, the Senior Education Director will be responsible for developing, enhancing, and aligning education programs and services within the framework of culturally informed education. This position works closely with the Senior Director of Cultural Heritage & Education (CHE).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Develop and implement a comprehensive educational strategy aligned with the Tribe’s mission and goals with guidance from Executive leadership, the T&Hʼs cultural programs, and citizen services.
• Identify emerging trends and best practices in Indigenous education to continuously improve program offerings while incorporating communitiesʼ needs.
• Provide oversight and direct the operations of educational programs and services.
• Lead the development, review, and revision of educational curriculum materials in collaboration with subject matter and cultural experts, ensuring alignment with relevant educational standards and objectives.
• Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of educators and instructional staff.
• Responsible for assisting staff in developing and implementing annual program work plans.
• Manage and monitor department workplans, budgets, grants, contracts, agreements, and memorandums.
• Ensure short and long-term goals and objectives align with tribal priorities and strategic direction.
• Secure funding opportunities through grants and donations to support educational initiatives.
• Explore and establish collaborations to expand program reach and impact.
• Build and maintain positive relationships with external partners, such as schools, universities, and educational institutions.
• Foster a positive and collaborative work environment and culture that reflects and promotes Tlingit & Haida traditional values and a passion for education.

NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
• Thorough knowledge of tribal education programs and services and inter-relationships between programs and partners.
• Knowledge and understanding of Tlingit & Haida functions, policies, goals, priorities, and operating programs.
• Leadership and management skills in program development, policy development, and staff direction and training.
• Ability to prepare and administer Tribal budgets, provide financial guidance and assistance, and administer contracts in accordance with established policies, rules, and regulations.
• Ability to effectively organize, assign, and supervise the work of department staff.
• Ability to achieve programmatic and organizational objectives, make sound decisions, and exercise informed judgment.
• Proven track record of developing, implementing, and managing successful educational programs.
• Strong project management, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong understanding of curriculum development, instructional design, and best practices in teaching and learning.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong personnel management skills.
• Knowledge of legal and regulation requirements.
• Skilled at conducting public meetings and comfortable with public speaking.
• Ability to develop partnerships with diverse groups, governments, agencies, organizations, and businesses.
• Excellent organizational skills with strong follow-through and attention to detail.
• Knowledge of funding sources, requirements, and federal regulations applicable to grants.
• Ability to work effectively with executives, managers, supervisors, employees, and organizations.
• Proficient in current versions of MS Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, Zoom, educational technology, and learning management systems.
• Extensive knowledge in computerized record keeping and reporting.
• Familiarity with Tlingit and Haida cultures, languages, and communities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)
• Master’s degree in a relevant field (i.e., Education, Curriculum Development, etc.)
• 10 years of experience in a leadership role within the education sector.
• Five (5) years of supervisory experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)
• Ph.D. in a relevant field (i.e., Education, Curriculum Development, etc.)
UNUSUAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR RESTRICTIONS
The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting and is generally sedentary. It requires routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying items weighing less than 40 lbs. Travel on a small aircraft or ferry may be required.
