The Role:

The Director of Academic Advising for the College of Education and Professional Studies, oversees the effective coordination and delivery of academic advising services for the college, supervises staff, interprets and implements policies and procedures, and addresses educational barriers and various conflicts related to a student’s academic progress. The director regularly collaborates with a variety of stakeholders to achieve college and university goals as well as ensure effective implementation of policies and standards of advising excellence as governed by the Academic Advising Council (AAC). In partnership with the AAC, the director is responsible for comprehensive evaluation and continuous improvement of advising services and university policy related to academic advising. Job Duties


Administration, Management, and Leadership:
  • Collaborate with the dean and associate dean of the college and other individuals to provide strategic planning and operational oversight for all undergraduate advising functions within the college to ensure effective advising practices are delivered to all CWU students pursuing a major within the college regardless of site or program modality.
  • In partnership with the Academic Advising Council (AAC), staff, and other stakeholders, develop and implement comprehensive advising services that have clearly outlined program objectives, action plans, proactive advising campaigns, and assessment strategies.
  • Contribute to creating a compassionate and healthy environment for advisors and for the students utilizing advising services.
  • Utilize various technological tools and advancements to deliver effective advising services to students.
  • Collaborate with academic departments to communicate accurate academic plans to students.
  • Manage advising communication plans and campaigns for undergraduate students within the college.
  • Work with Information Services (IS) to develop query needs, maintain advisor notes, offer advising recommendations and participate in testing of PeopleSoft upgrades.
  • Work closely with Public Affairs to maintain and update the college’s advising center website.
  • Serve as an active member of the AAC.
  • Meets regularly with the chair of the AAC, associate deans, and other advising directors to ensure AAC goals and objectives are met, especially as they relate to advising standards of practice and professional development of new and experienced advisors.
  • Advocate for resources necessary for advisors to complete their work effectively.
  • Work with advisors, site directors, faculty, and other key stakeholders to ensure academic advising is available and accessible to CWU Center and online students.
  • Attend, as necessary, Faculty Senate Curriculum Committee, College Dean, and faculty led committee meetings.
  • Address and help find solutions for various concerns and issues brought forward that are impeding a students’ academic progress.
Academic Advising:
  • Provide academic advising for students interested in pursuing a major within the college when necessary. Maintains a regular collection of advisees and meets with them on a regular basis.
  • Help students understand CWU General Education, credit transfer policies, curriculum, academic planning, degree requirements, and graduation requirements.
  • Work with students to clarify possible major programs and pre-admission requirements.
  • Analyze and interpret student data, placement results, and transcripts.
  • Advise on course articulation, appropriate academic course loads, and course selection.
  • Offer advice and mentor students with academic issues or barriers.
Supervision:
  • Actively engage in recruitment and hiring new employees.
  • Oversee and direct the work of staff.
  • Clearly define performance expectations, ensure accountability, and provide ongoing informal feedback. Conduct formal performance evaluations and develop personalized professional development plans for advising staff.
  • Promote professional development opportunities.
  • Develop and foster supportive working relationships, motivation and engagement.
  • Communicate information to staff on an ongoing basis to influence their engagement and willingness participate as part of a larger community.
  • Recognize and reward employees for good performance; take corrective action in a timely manner; ensure advisors complete university required trainings and participate in university-lead advising professional development
  • Develop personalized professional development plans for advising staff.
  • Schedule employee work hours/shifts; monitor hours worked; approve payable time and absence requests.
  • Adjust leadership style as needed to achieve results.
  • Recognize value of and promotes diverse workforce. Value and encourage diverse perspectives, creativity and teamwork.
Assessment:
  • Implement annual student surveys to collect information on students’ experience related to advising services.
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of data collection related to the advising unit and programs.
  • Evaluate programmatic impact on retention, academic success, major declaration, and time to degree.
  • Write and submit annual reports on advising to dean/associate dean of the college and AAC.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • At least six (6) years of documented higher education experience in academic advising or a related academic unit/program.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability and/or experience working collaboratively across organizational structures with students and/or co-workers from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, and experiences.
  • Commitment to advancing a diverse, equitable, and inclusive learning and working environment.
  • OR applicable combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge and background in advising practices and procedures.
  • Experience in the development of academic advising programs and related initiatives informed by NACADA and CAS Standards for Advising.
  • Experience supervising a diverse staff.
  • Strong understanding of and demonstrated experience utilizing student development theories.
  • Demonstrated experience with Student Information Systems (e.g., People Soft).
  • Demonstrated experience with programmatic and outcome assessment.
  • A record of promoting inclusivity in the work environment.
  • Ability to incorporate multicultural perspectives and issues into everyday conversations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for students through various activities.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule


Salary: $63,776 - $79,720 annually

Schedule/Appointment: Monday - Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm (1 hour lunch)

Working Conditions
: Work is performed in an academic advising office and various other locations throughout campus, depending on the function being performed. It is essential to be able to remain at a desk/computer workstation for prolonged periods of time, perform extensive data entry and other computer-related tasks. Quarterly travel to Centers, and some evening and weekend work will be required for this position.
