Position Summary

The Facilities Attendant performs a variety of full performance and semi-skilled duties custodial, facility maintenance, and facility emergency tasks to assure a safe and properly cared for environment. This position typically works independently at night and on weekends, but may also be assigned to work during weekdays.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Works various night, day, or weekend schedules. May work independently at night or on weekends and is responsible for setup/teardown for events; responds to facility incidents/emergencies to include fire alarms and responding to plumbing/roof leaks; works with other physical plant staff and campus security to respond to emergencies.
  2. Performs custodial duties in assigned buildings, including routine cleaning of restrooms, classrooms, offices, and public areas, responding to emergency cleanup needs, removing trash, etc.; performs deep cleaning as scheduled or required.
  3. Unlocks and locks facilities per schedule or as necessary.
  4. Responds to facilities emergencies; apprises situations and makes decisions mitigating threats, damage or otherwise adverse outcomes.
  5. Provides assistance to college events and activities as necessary, including setting up and/or removing athletic equipment, tables, chairs, etc. Works directly with event organizers as needed.
  6. Assists in performing routine maintenance and minor repairs of equipment and tools.
  7. Buffs, dusts, waxes, washes, and polishes floors removing scuff marks, heavy dirt, scratches etc.; vacuums rugs; washes and cleans walls, door frames, doors, and glass; empties and cleans waste receptacles; disinfects gym change rooms; cleans and sanitizes rest room sinks and bowls; washes windows;
  8. Sets up and prepares various meeting areas for events and activities, games, etc.; performs related tasks as needed to maintain clean and attractive facilities.
  9. Performs seasonal facility maintenance tasks such as floor stripping and refinishing, shampoos carpet, performs auto scrubbing, etc.
  10. Performs general facility security tasks; assures that rooms, offices, and various facility areas are locked and secure; provides access to various public interest groups which have scheduled use of facilities, rooms, and equipment; assures lighting is turned off in classes and gyms after use.
  11. In the absence of the Campus Services Foreman, may be responsible to supervise or manage other campus services and custodial staff.
  12. Performs related duties as assigned.

 Position Specifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education
    • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Experience
    • Two (2) years of experience performing related duties.
  • Licenses/Certifications
    • None

    • Equivalent combinations of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired may be considered on a case-by-case basis

    • None

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Working knowledge of proper custodial practices, including use of equipment and chemicals; cleaning methods and materials; types of cleaning and maintenance equipment; fire alarms systems; emergency safety shutdown procedures. Some knowledge of electrical control panel maintenance and operations, OSHA regulations, and building systems.
  2. Skill in equipment maintenance and repair; the use of floor buffers, vacuums, brooms, sprayers, mops, scrubbing machine, steam cleaning machine, ladders, carpet extractor, floor stripper, and other tools common to custodial operations.
  3. Ability to learn and follow college policies and procedures; lift heavy objects and perform heavy manual labor; perform manual cleaning and related labor and to work continuous hours while standing; understand and follow verbal and written instructions; work independently and interact with others in an appropriate, helpful manner; establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and supervisors; respond to difficult interpersonal situations is a professional manner.

 Level of Supervision

This position works under the general supervision of the Campus Services Foreman.

  • Equipment Used
    • Standard office equipment, desktop and mobile computer hardware/software, hand tools, power tools (i.e. electrical hand drill), ladder, and general equipment utilized for the support and maintenance of standard desktop and mobile computer workstations.
  • Physical Requirements
    • Tasks require variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as lifting, walking, standing, stooping and reaching. Hearing and seeing required in performance of essential functions. Common eye, hand, finger, leg and foot dexterity required. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and discriminating thinking. May be required to regularly lift in excess of 50 pounds in normal course of job performance.
  • Environmental Conditions
    • Work is typically performed in a conditioned building setting under limited supervision, but may include working outdoors, and includes work in housing, maintenance room spaces, classrooms, computer labs, science laboratories, athletic facilities, support spaces, and staff offices. Evening and/or weekend work may be required.
