Neurology Research Associate - Cerebrovascular Lab

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Neurology is seeking a Research Associate to manage the research team and laboratory operations of the Cerebrovascular Laboratory (CVL), under the guidance and leadership of active clinician-scientist Santiago Ortega-Gutierrez, MD, MSc. This position will organize schedules of different participants, organize and schedule meetings with internal and external collaborators, maintain clinical databases, coordinate data transfer with collaborating centers, and conduct research projects.

The primary research goal of the CVL is to provide insights, expand scientific knowledge, and improve outcomes of patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic diseases affecting the brain and spinal cord.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Clinical research
  • Maintenance of the clinical databases.
  • Collection and transfers of imaging files to collaborating centers.
  • Assistance with data analysis, manuscript writing, and potentially small pilot grant applications.
  • Arrange and plan weekly activities, including the schedules of study participants.
  • Develop and structure the clinical laboratory.
  • Use of medical technical skills to obtain, analyze, and archive data.
  • Manage laboratory meetings and communications with vendors, internal and external collaborators, and visitors.
  • Assist with submissions and revisions of grants and laboratory protocols.
  • Monitor compliance with patient-protected information and regulatory guidelines.
  • Order and maintain lab equipment, supplies, clinical data, and imaging files.
  • Maintain and update lab protocols and data.
  • Monitor accounts, expenditures, and reconciliation of accounts.
  • Assist Principal Investigator in providing direction and training to students and newer employees.

Please note: This is a specified term position that will last 12 months. An extension may be reviewed after the initial 12 months but is not guaranteed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1 – 3 years of lab research or clinical trials research experience
  • Prior experience and competence with clinical research techniques, including manuscript writing, data curation, imaging file administration and transfer, imaging analysis and adjudication, statistical analysis, and team management.
  • Prior experience with some form of imaging software (PACS), including imaging transfer and administration. Alternative expertise also accepted, including video recording, video editing, figure creation, image editing, etc.
  • Prior experience and competence with clinical databases including data depuration, summary, and analysis.
  • Evidence of a dedication to completing tasks and willingness to work at agreed upon times is critical.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate (written and spoken) effectively with collaborators.

Desired Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge and experience with R (or equivalent) coding and/or clinical/imaging data analysis.
  • Prior experience in clinical research with patient or basis scientific data, with demonstrated interest in the field of cerebrovascular diseases.
