About the Role
The Director of Engineering leads the development of ARC and ChargeItSpot software.
As a leader, the Director of Engineering marshals both in-house and external resources
to create quality software solutions.

  • Identify and address complex challenges and provide creative solutions to
advance the organization's goals.
  • Foster strong engineering practices and processes, build teams that value
excellence.
  • Lead a team of engineers, which may include hiring, mentoring, and providing
guidance to team members to help them excel in their roles. Conduct
performance evaluations, setting goals, and providing feedback to team
members to help them grow and develop in their roles.
  • Oversee the planning, execution, and successful completion of projects, ensuring
they align with the organization's goals and objectives. Provide architectural
guidance for complex distributed systems.
  • Encourage innovation within the team by exploring new methodologies, tools,
and technologies that can enhance research capabilities and outcomes.
  • Note: This is a hands-on role that requires the Director to work directly on
software. We are looking for candidates who are excited by leadership as well
as the opportunity to build things.

Relevant Technologies
Director of Engineering needs to have experience using the following technologies:

  • Experience building server side code using the Java, Spring framework, and
JPA/Hibernate.
  • Experience building client side code using JavaFX, JSP/JSTL, and
React.
  • CI/CD technologies such as BitBucket Pipelines, Jenkins, or similar tools.
  • An understanding of version control systems such as git.
  • Experience using Linux (Ubuntu preferred), SSH, and the Linux command line.
  • Advanced knowledge of Postgres, database tuning, and database design
concepts especially in a high-availability environment.
  • Knowledge of USB device communication using USB HID or USB Serial with

middleware.

Other desirable skills include a knowledge of TCP/IP networking, knowledge of
Windows/MacOS, and experience using Atlassian tools such as JIRA, Trello, and
Confluence.

Qualifications
  • 7 years of relevant team leadership and development experience using the
technologies listed in the Relevant Technologies section.
  • A focus on improving the developer experience through documentation,
tooling and process improvements.
  • Experience in leading a team of developers and quality assurance personnel in
an agile environment.
  • Prior experience leading a distributed team is a plus.
  • Ability to estimate work required to build features given system constraints and
team member skill level.
  • Assessing the performance of in-house and external development team
members.
  • Ability to analyze and understand complex interactions between the kiosks and
servers in an Internet of Things architecture.
  • Ability to communicate difficult to understand technology concepts to product
managers, operations, client success and external customers.
  • Knowledge of G-Suite (Google Docs and the like) along with Office 365 tools.
  • Familiarity with Slack, Google Meetings, and other collaboration tools.
  • Excellent people and problem solving skills.

Location
Our headquarters is in downtown Philadelphia, PA (Old City). We operate in a hybrid
work model, and have a strong preference for candidates who can work in our office at
least 3 days/week since interacting with our hardware is a critical component of this
role. Most of our development team is in the office ~3 days per week. You must be
authorized to work in the United States.
