Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Three (3) or more years of successful teaching in middle and/or high school in English Language Arts or reading instruction
  • Excellent communication skills: facilitation, collaboration, and listening; time management and organizational skills, flexibility, synthesizing and distribution of information; technology knowledge and skills, data analysis skills.
  • Florida certified for grades 6 - 12 English or middle grades English (grades 5 – 9)
  • Teacher certification in reading or reading endorsement
  • Certification in clinical education, or commitment to actively pursue and acquire within one year
  • Literacy Coaching Endorsement or commitment to actively pursue and acquire within two years

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree
  • Endorsement in ESOL
  • Experience in instructional coaching of three (3) or more years
  • Ability to provide professional learning
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply effective methods for planning, implementing and analyzing standards-based literacy instruction based on the science of reading and evidence-based practices.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to apply effective pedagogy and andragogy - applying foundational principals of how students learn and adult learning theory
  • Knowledge and ability to apply principles and practices that foster an inclusive and collaborative culture that supports coaching.
  • Willingness to grow professionally by attending and participating in position-appropriate district, state, and regional conferences and training.

  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate.

Performance Responsibilities:


  • Assists secondary teachers to align, interpret, implement, and assess the secondary reading, writing, and language arts program, instructional materials, and other support resources.
  • Supports teachers in analyzing the effectiveness of lessons, instructional materials and assessments using a variety of techniques (e.g., lesson plans, formative/summative assessments and student work samples)
  • Models successful teaching practices at the classroom level, with a concentration on differentiation in reading, writing and language arts instruction to meet the educational needs of all students.
  • Observes and analyzes the implementation of instructional practices to provide instructional support.
  • Develops a plan for effective coaching conversations informed by observations, data analysis, and classroom artifacts.
  • Implements coaching cycles and collects data to inform continued individualized and on-going job-embedded professional learning as needed for identified teachers.
  • Collects and uses data on instructional practices to inform and implement professional learning opportunities.
  • Provides professional learning to include job-embedded coaching and support for secondary teachers in implementing immediate, intensive, intervention (iii) for struggling and at-risk readers.
  • Coaches secondary teachers in incorporating reading skill instruction across all curricular areas.
  • Coaches secondary teachers in the utilization of the district’s ELA/Reading Curriculum Maps, Pacing Guides, The K-12 Comprehensive Evidence-Based Reading Plan, Critical Concepts and Cycles of Effective Instruction, and other district instructional practices.
  • Works with the Division of Learning and Secondary School Principals to analyze instructional programs and materials to ensure that English Language Arts/Reading courses align with state and national standards.
  • Partners with the Psychometrician and the Curriculum and Instruction Specialist to provide assistance to teachers in analyzing district and school-wide data to make the most effective decisions for reading, writing, and language arts instruction.
  • Attends and participates in both district and state sponsored training and professional learning in literacy/reading coaching.
  • Serves as a school-based and/or district-based committee member in the instructional materials adoption process to review and select textbooks, technology, and other language arts and reading instructional materials for secondary grade levels.
  • Researches, prepares materials, and identifies resources for use by the district, schools, and teachers (e.g. teaching strategies, assessment of reading skills, and interpretation and use of assessment results, etc.).
  • Researches and provides information and guidance regarding a range of effective and innovative reading practices through various activities such as: individual discussions, coaching sessions, model lessons with pre-and post- discussion/analysis, study groups, lesson studies, instructional rounds, staff meetings, and other professional learning opportunities.
  • Participates in collaborative meetings (department meetings, data days, professional learning communities, district learning communities, etc.) to assist in the analysis and utilization of assessment data to improve the focus of instructional planning for student achievement.
  • Meets regularly with the principal and/or designee to review benchmarks, established data points, and student progress towards identified instructional goals.
  • Meets regularly with other district instructional coaches and Division of Learning team members as determined.
  • Performs other job-related functions as assigned.
