Roxbury Academic Support Program Instructor
Cheshire Academy seeks a full-time learning specialist or teacher to serve primarily as a Roxbury Academic Support Program Instructor for the 2023-24 academic year. This position may also include some classroom teaching, depending on the instructor’s expertise.
The Roxbury Academic Support Program, founded over 20 years ago at Cheshire Academy, is a unique, effective, and individualized approach to supporting students. The goal of the program is to develop proactive, knowledgeable, and independent learners who take responsibility for their education and academic success as they graduate and transition to college.
Roxbury Instructors are trained in our signature academic coaching model and work one-on-one with students daily on executive functioning skill building, learning strategies instruction, and ongoing goal setting and progress monitoring. Close collaboration and communication between and among Roxbury instructors, classroom teachers, parents, dorm parents and the health center is integral to the support of participating students.
Specific duties include:
- Work independently with each Roxbury student at the level assigned;
- Implement all components of the Roxbury Academic Coaching Model with fidelity;
- Help students understand themselves as learners, teaching strategies and skills to help them to leverage their strengths and best meet and overcome academic challenges.
- Dedicate time to support each student in meeting academic demands and expectations and advocate for students when necessary;
- Document daily student progress and maintain ongoing communication with classroom teachers, Roxbury director, and when needed, the Health Center;
- Communicate with parents and caregivers at least once a week, and more frequently as situations dictate;
- Effectively plan sessions for and with students, understanding that each student requires individual preparation, focus, and support.
Other responsibilities include:
- Advising;
- Coaching and/or leading cocurricular activities;
- Weekend team responsibilities;
- Residential/dormitory duties (if housing is provided).
- Must have a valid driver’s license with the ability to obtain a CT “A” endorsement for purposes of transporting students.
While there are other ways to contribute to the cocurricular program, current coaching needs that we are looking to fill include:
- Head Varsity Track & Field
- Head Varsity Girls Lacrosse
- Assistant Varsity Boys Soccer
School provided housing is not guaranteed for the academic year of 2023-2024.
Requirements
Candidates with an advanced degree, experience meeting a wide range of learning needs at the secondary or post-secondary levels, and a commitment to antiracism are strongly encouraged to apply. Instructors with a classroom teaching background will also be considered, and the ability and willingness to teach courses in a subject of the instructor’s expertise is also a plus. A Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in special or general education, and a Master’s degree is preferred.
Salary : $40,900 - $51,800
