Claims Adjuster

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in business, finance or a related field; one year of experience in adjusting personal injury, property loss and damage claims; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Working knowledge of claims reporting and disposition procedures for workers' compensation, general liability, auto liability, and property; of basic insurance principles and practices, contract coverages, liability and adjustment procedures. Ability to determine liability for loss; to negotiate claim settlements; to identify, interpret and apply to individual cases applicable provisions of laws and contracts; to interview people, gather facts, and analyze collected data to make insurance claim payment determinations; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to operate a personal computer and related software and other standard office equipment; to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.

Current valid driver's license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving record must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Record must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.

Duties

Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in adjusting personal injury, property loss, damage, and related claims against Chesterfield County and Chesterfield County Public Schools.

The Claims Adjuster will also:

Investigate and adjust claims asserted against Chesterfield County and Chesterfield County Public Schools. Conducts on-site investigations; interviews witnesses; reviews documentation and reports. Negotiates and makes settlements for claims within settlement authority, and makes recommendations to supervisor for claims outside of settlement authority. Compiles information for subrogation or litigation or manages assigned Workers' Compensation claims cases, ensuring compliance with statutes, rules or procedure and state laws. Confers and coordinates with injured employees, attorneys, medical providers, and vendors. Confers with departmental management, attorneys, and others to resolve workers' compensation claims issues. Calculates present and future claim value expense, and authorizes and processes payments; develops strategies to contain costs and makes reserve recommendations to ensure case reserves adequacy when adjusting Workers' Compensation claims. Maintains and prepares a variety of records and reports related to claims activities. Perform other work as required.
