What are the responsibilities and job description for the Yard Jockey I position at Chewy?
Our Opportunity:
The ideal Switcher Driver I will work closely with the Chewy transportation and operations team. The function of this role is to back up the Switcher Driver II role and work within the FC performing dock related duties to facilitate transportation and FC functions. This can include responsibilities on the inbound or outbound docks as well as learning Coordinator roles to create depth in other positions. Responsibilities also require collaboration with all aspects of the FC operations, as well as Chewy carriers and vendors, to provide exemplary customer service in our Lewisberry, PA location. This position is critical in ensuring that the Chewy shipping/receiving docks have adequate support and can step into the driving role when needed. Additionally, while driving, this role will ensure a supply and constant flow of loaded and empty trailers that are positioned safely, accurately, and efficiently. Ideally, the successful candidate will have some experience in yard operations with an emphasis on switching or driving experience.
What you'll do:
- Work with transportation and operations teams to prioritize tasks
- Perform periodic spot checks of the yard and reporting on equipment
- Train on a regular basis to keep driving and trailer spotting skills current
- When driving, ensure switcher equipment is in safe working order to include pre/post-trip inspections, tire condition, and unit hours reporting
- When driving, safely move carrier trailers within the Chewy yard to include both loads and empties for the Inbound and Outbound docks
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
- A safety driven mindset
- A valid driver’s license
- Successfully passing Chewy’s driving and knowledge proficiency tests
- Maintenance of Chewy’s internal certification for driving and knowledge proficiency
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills
- Ability to effectively operate independently with minimal supervision
- Effective verbal and written communications skills
- Ability to effectively communicate via two-way radio
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays if needed
- Comply with all company policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
- High level of professionalism and strong work ethic
- The ability to adjust to sudden changes in customer demands or operational goals
- Ability to handle multiple tasks at once
- Adhere to quality and performance standards
- Ability to work in a fast-paced distribution environment
- Detail oriented and accurate
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1 to 3 years relevant switcher operating / driving / warehouse / distribution / military experience related to transportation equipment operations
- A valid CDL Class A License
- A high level of comfort with backing and operating heavy machinery
- Microsoft Excel and Outlook experience
