Day in the Life of a Nurse Practitioner:

Responsible for providing excellent quality care for patients in accordance with Cheyenne Regional Medical Center/Groups standards and practices in hospital, clinic and outreach clinic settings.

Here’s what you will be doing:

  • Assesses patient status by obtaining health history through patient/family interviews and chart review; assess presenting illness, risk factors, and family history, psychosocial situation, and cultural factors; and perform appropriate physical examination.
  • Orders/performs appropriate laboratory diagnostic and other screening tests.
  • Seeks other information as needed, including consultation with other providers and other disciplines, for evaluation of illness.
  • Develops and implements treatment plan by prescribing/dispensing medications and/or injections in compliance with medical practice guidelines and state laws.
  • Instructs patient/family regarding medications and treatments.
  • Educates patients regarding health promotion/illness prevention.
  • Recommends appropriate community resources to meet patient/family needs.
  • Communicates appropriate case management information to other professionals and community agencies.
  • Prepares documentation for medical records including updating patient medical chart by posting examination and test results, diagnosis, medications, and treatment in written/computerized manner.
  • Participates in peer reviews, chart reviews, staff education, clinical guideline development, and other continuing education and quality assurance activities to demonstrate compliance with standards, regulation, policies, and procedures.
  • Collaborates with physicians when indicated in managing acute and long-term medical needs of patient.
  • Provides monitoring and continuity of care between visits according to treatment plan including triaging patient calls/e-mails.
  • Participates in professional development activities and maintain professional affiliations.

DEPARTMENT/ROLE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

CHEYENNE FAMILY MEDICINE: Participates in Patient Centered Medical Home Care Team collaboration.

CHILDREN’S CLINIC: Participates in Patient Centered Medical Home Care Team collaboration.

FAMILY FIRST: Participates in Patient Centered Medical Home Care Team collaboration.

HOSPITALIST SERVICE: Inpatient care. Admissions and cross coverage of hospitalized adult patients

PALLIATIVE CARE/HOSPICE: Assist patients with chronic and/ or terminal illness in determining goals of care and providing symptom management. On Call Services with provider rotation. Attend weekly interdisciplinary meetings.

PLAZA FAMILY MEDICINE: On call telephone services for Primary Care to rotate with other providers. Manage Chronic and Acute illness in the outpatient Primary Care Setting. Participates in Patient Centered Medical Home Care Team collaboration.

Desired skills:

  • Knowledge of advanced practice of nursing including anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology and therapeutics, basic nutrition, behavioral factors, psychosocial/family systems, diagnostic testing, interpretation of results and clinical decision making, alternative treatment modalities
  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices and regulations related to evaluating and providing patient care, and professional ethics related to the delivery of nursing care
  • Knowledge of patient assessment techniques including taking medical histories, compliance with care recommendations
  • Ability to diagnose and treat complex medical problems, analyze data and develop a plan of care utilizing evidence based medicine
  • Skill in gathering and analyzing physiological, socioeconomic, and emotional patient data
  • Knowledge of health promotion, health risk identification, and patient education principles and techniques
  • Knowledge of community, professional, and educational resources
  • Skill in case management, time management, problem solving and crisis intervention
  • Ability to establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, clinical staff, and the public
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills

Job Requirements:

Here’s what you will need:

  • Completion of an accredited Acute Care Nurse Practitioner/Advanced Practice Nurse program
  • In the state of Wyoming, as regulated by Wyoming State Board of Nursing under the Wyoming Nurse Practice Act and Administrative Rules and Regulations defined below:

o The APRN is subject at all times the standards and scope of practice established by national professional organizations and/or accrediting agencies representing the various core, role and population focus areas for APRNs, and the NPA.

o The Board recognizes APRN core, role and population focus areas described in the scope of practice statements for APRNs issued by national professional organizations and/or accrediting agencies.

o Role and population focus of the APRN shall be declared, and the role and population focus to be utilized shall be the title(s) granted by nationally recognized professional organizations(s) and/or accrediting agency(ies) or the title(s) of the role and population focus of nursing practice in the which the APRN has received postgraduate education preparation.

o In order to practice in one of the four roles and in a defined population, the APRN shall be recognized by the Board in that particular role with a population focus of advanced practice nursing.

  • Nurse Practitioner/Advanced Practice Nurse licensure in the State of Wyoming
  • Cheyenne Regional RQI within 14 calendar days of start date
  • Specialty certifications as required per department/clinic specifications
  • Controlled Substance Licensure from the Wyoming State Board of Pharmacy
  • Federal DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) licensure
