Job Title:  Summer Hockey Camp Director
Department:  Fifth Third Arena/Amateur Hockey
Reports to: Youth Hockey Supervisor

The Team:  
The Chicago Blackhawks started their journey as one of the NHL’s “Original Six” professional ice hockey teams in 1926.   Members of the Central Division in the NHL’s Western Conference and six-time Stanley Cup Champions (1934, 1938, 1961, 2010, 2013, 2015), the team calls the United Center home.

The Camp Director leads and acts as a role model to the group of camp counselors, The Camp Director is responsible for organizing, supervising, and leading the camp and ensuring that it is positive, encouraging, safe, respectful, and a fun environment for all campers involved. A high priority is placed on communication, organization, and risk management with this position.
 
How You’ll Contribute:  
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of training prior to the start of camp 
  • Assist with the training, supervising, mentoring, and evaluating of camp staff.
  • Address any staff behavior or discipline issues with counselors as needed
  • Assist with tracking camp registration, advise on equipment purchases, and developing and adhering to camp procedures
  • Create detailed activity schedules and calendars for each week of camp 
  • Ensure that lesson plans/schedules are followed
  • Understand and assist with safety and risk management standards and qualifications 
  • Distribute staff uniforms and camp participant equipment and jerseys
  • Create and monitor sign-in/out sheets, ensuring that youth are properly signed in and out, and call to check with families when a child is not in attendance 
  • Understand and follow all camp rules. Communicate and enforce rules and policies to campers and the public
  • Communicate with parents/guardians about daily activities
  • Play an active role in leading activities, constantly setting a good example for youth and camp staff
  • Directly supervise campers and ensure that they are on task, safe, and having fun from the moment they have checked in though the time a parent/guardian has signed them out
  • Lead scheduled activities as well as initiate spontaneous activities to accommodate schedule conflicts/changes
  • Provide excellent customer service and maintain a positive public image by addressing questions and concerns from staff, patrons, participants, and parents immediately. 
  • Become familiar with participants and parents; know their names, personalities, skills and interests
  • Keep camp supplies, equipment, and facility space clean, organized, and safe. Return all equipment to its proper place when done  
  • Inspect equipment and report maintenance needs to supervisor. 
  • Complete all paperwork and documentation including, safety logs, accident and incident reports, discipline logs and sign in-out sheets.  Report discipline issues to supervisor
  • Inventory and monitor first aid kit supplies.  
  • Attend all staff meetings and training programs as specified 
 
Player Stats and Qualifications:  
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Experience supervising staff or volunteers, especially in a recreation setting, preferred
  • Experience in planning and implementing daily lesson plans
  • Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED; college coursework in recreation, education, social work, or related field preferred
  • Must have at least 2 years of experience working at a summer camp or in a similar setting
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to successfully execute camps
  • Must be a proficient skater/hockey player
  • Must have a valid drivers license and be comfortable driving a large SUV
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate recreational activities
  • The Camp Director must be organized, responsible, professional, and able to coordinate a wide variety of activities each week
  • Must have the ability to solve problems as they arise and be able to perform tasks without direct supervision
  • Must be highly motivated and able to assume a positive and active role in the camp, even while working under potentially stressful conditions (hot or cold weather, upset or injured participants, etc.)
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR required by the start of camp
  • Must be familiar with and able to use phones, computers, and Microsoft Office
  • Must have the ability to be firm with participants, when necessary, enforce park district rules, and make sound decisions in order to secure the safety and well-being of all campers, facilities, and equipment
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision
  • Ability to present ideas and recommendations in a concise manner
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and/or written instructions efficiently and effectively and to read and understand printed material
  • Ability to effectively interact and communicate well with others
  • Ability to interpret and explain recreation division and District policies and procedures
  • Ability to follow safety guidelines and exercise judgment in all aspects of responsibility
  • Ability to resolve conflict safely, calmly and effectively
