Overview

We are seeking Postdoctoral Research Scholar applicants who have a strong interest in reproductive biology. Applicants with a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree in the biological sciences and accompanying research experience in the fields of biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, etc. are encouraged to apply. Postdoctoral Research Scholars will have opportunities for research training and career development in the context of advancing the basic/translational research goals of the Varberg lab at the Children's Mercy Research Institute (CMRI). The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will conduct high impact research in basic/translational science with special emphasis on placental development. Primary models used in the work are human stem cell models and genetically modified rat models. Experience with rodent or embryo handling, cell culture techniques, and data analysis (bioinformatics) preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct original laboratory research. Research will be performed in the general areas of cell/molecular biology, genomics, and reproductive biology. Postdoctoral Research Scholar will develop hypotheses and design and carry out laboratory experiments using a variety of research techniques to test those hypotheses under the supervision of his or her research mentors.
  • Analyze Research Data. Organize data systematically in appropriate databases and use appropriate statistical and other analytical methods to analyze data, summarize findings, draw conclusions from experiments, and identify future directions.
  • Report Research Results. Present research results within the CMRI at lab meetings and division meetings and externally at regional, national, and international scientific conferences. Publish research results in the form of peer-reviewed abstracts, original research articles and review articles in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Continuing Education, Career/Professional Development, and Grant Writing. Postdoctoral Research Scholar will attend and participate in mandatory Children’s Mercy educational programs, division meetings, scholarly conferences, and visiting lecturer seminar series. Attend external career/professional development opportunities, training courses (e.g., grant writing workshops, etc.). Assemble and meet with a mentoring team 2x/year and prepare and submit grant applications (e.g., NIH F32, Lalor Foundation, etc.). Other specific responsibilities include:
  • Fulfill mandatory education requirements by personal attendance or online training (e.g., animal
  • training, compliance training, biohazardous material training, etc.).

  • Participate in Lab and Division meetings.
  • Attend scholarly conferences or visiting lecturer seminars at Children’s Mercy
  • Attend external career/professional development opportunities when applicable.
  • Mentoring team meetings 2x/year.
  • Prepare and submit grant applications if applicable 
  • Qualifications

    • Ph.D. or MD or related doctoral level degree in a relevant discipline and 1-2 years experience

    Remote Work/Work from Home

    This position is not eligible work remotely, which means that the person hired will be required to work onsite at one of our Children’s Mercy locations and may not work from home.
