Department Overview
Health Information Management is responsible for the:
- Oversight of the quality, timeliness, and accuracy of the medical record and patient indexes for patient care, legal, revenue, research, and regulatory needs;
- Classification of diagnosis and procedures according to approved classification and nomenclatures such as ICD-9, CPT, Snomed, etc.
- Maintaining the security and integrity of health information;
- Providing documentation tools/services such as dictation, transcription, electronic templates, scribes, and paper forms;
- Collection, quality control, and dissemination of data for comparative data bases and statistical reports including specific disease and procedure registries;
- Providing access to medical record information through release of information processes.
Position Summary
Leadership of ambulatory and professional fee coding including accurate assignment of International Classification of Diseases, Current Procedural Terminology and E&M classification, accurate collection of clinical and demographic data as well as optimization of medical record documentation as part of the clinical documentation improvement program. Responsible for quality control, productivity and timely filing of claims, denial management and ongoing competency with related standards and regulations.

License/Certification/Registration:
- Coding certification through AHIMA or AAPC preferred
- RHIA or RHIT preferred
Education:
- Bachelor's in health information management or associate degree in HIM with proven management experience. Master's degree or advanced coding certification preferred.
Experience:
- 3-5 years of management experience required
- Ambulatory coding including E&M classification
- Progressive experience in HIM systems and management preferred
- Encoder, CAC and EMR software applications preferred
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Staff management experience
- Ability to manage non-standard classification and nomenclature system and make decisions and refer on to CMS, Coding Clinic or CHA
- Experience with databases and niche software products
- Ability to manage projects independently
- Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast paced environment
- Collaborative as well as independent decision making skills
- Strong communication skills including data presentations to diverse groups
- Strong working knowledge of professional fee billing and the impact to physician compensation
