Job Summary:
The Duty Officer is an administrative position based in Chloeta’s Catastrophe (CAT) Command Center (CCC) in Oklahoma City, OK and provides daily intelligence support and operational coordination for field based wildland fire resources on a nationwide basis.

Compensation:

  • Non-exempt 
  • $18.94-24.96 per hour

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Ensures fire season severity predictions, fire behavior, and fire activity levels are being monitored and takes appropriate actions to ensure safe, efficient and effective operations of responding units.
  • Prepares, reviews and conducts briefings for field-based firefighting resources preparing to mobilize to an incident.
  • Works in conjunction with Meteorologists, GIS Specialists, other Duty Officers and Data Analysts to monitor daily fire situation(s) nationally to keep apprised of possible fire complexities and dangers.
  • Works in conjunction with leadership to direct and coordinate the daily assignment of field based firefighting resources across a large geographic area.  
  • Anticipates fire suppression needs and recommends resource allocation/response based on the anticipated severity of the incident. 
  • Review internal operating procedures and systems, makes recommendations for improvement, and update/develop operating plans and mobilization guides. 
  • Oversees wildfire preparedness assessments for homeowners and provides quality control for fire management program activities.
  • Monitors the application and use of fire management agreements and contracts, to ensure effectiveness and conformity with established standards.
  • Identifies/communicates to leadership shortages for critical resources; provides information for determining allocation priorities for those critical resources relating to personnel, apparatus, equipment, and supplies.

Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • Ability to function in a fast paced environment common to a full time Emergency Operations Center (EOC)
  • May be subject to working nights, weekends or holidays.
  • Exemplary written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to clearly communicate operational priorities to field based firefighting resources via a variety of communication methods.
  • Ability to coordinate and collaborate with a variety of scientific and technical disciplines within the CAT Command Center.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, satellite imagery and radar information in relation to wildfire activity and make safety based resource allocation decisions based on fuels, weather and topography. 

 

Education and Experience: 

  • Required: Associates Degree in Forestry or a related field or a minimum of 10-15 years of wildland fire experience with verifiable progression through fire leadership positions.
  • Required: Minimum five (5) years experience in wildland fire management and leadership at the NWCG Strike Team/Task Force Leader position (or equivalent) or higher. 
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in related field 
  • Preferred: Seven (7) years experience in wildland fire management and leadership at the NWCG Strike Team/Task Force Leader position or higher.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to pass a WCT (Work Capacity Test a.k.a “Pack Test”) at Arduous Level (Complete a 3 mile walk wearing a 45 pound pack in less than 45 minutes)
  • Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds at times.
  • This job operates in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, tablets etc.

Drug and Alcohol Testing:
To enforce Chloeta’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy, an employee or candidate could be subject to undergoing a drug screen and/or alcohol testing at the beginning of employment, as well as after commencement of employment where there is reasonable suspicion of intoxication, or following an automobile or other accident, or as part of a company or facility-wide random drug screen process. 

Please be advised that this position is considered “safety-sensitive” for purposes of Chloeta’s drug and alcohol testing policy, pursuant to Oklahoma Statutes title 63, section 427.8(K).

 

Emergency Response:

Every Chloeta employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites. All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official Duty Station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official Position Description (PD). Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions.
