Job Description

Job Summary:

The General Physician will provide medical/surgical services in the delivery of patient care in a federal facility in a Native American/American Indian community in Towaoc, CO.


Southern Colorado Ute Service Unit (SCUSU) is a Service Unit under the Albuquerque Area Office of the Indian Health Service, a branch of the Department of Health and Human Services. The Ute Mountain Ute Health Center is located in Towaoc, CO and serves the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe. The UMUHC provides outpatient medical services to approximately 4,500 Natives in the arena of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatric Medicine, Psychiatric Medicine, Prenatal, Podiatry, Behavioral Health, Audiology, Dental, Optometry, Pharmacy, Nutrition, Laboratory, Public Health Nursing, and X-ray Services.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive medical care in order to perform diagnosis, evaluation and treatment for medical disorders.

  • Perform appropriate medical services particularly focusing in the utilization of his/her professional training and experience.

  • Provide consultation to medical staff on patients in the management of chronic and acute medical conditions.

  • Maintain health record in accordance with established Policy and Protocols incompliance with Privacy Act, HIPAA and other IHS Standards.

  • Perform and direct care/services to pediatric, geriatric, adolescent and adult patients.
  • Perform and utilize the appropriate processes in identifying individual patient problems and in developing, implementing and evaluating patient care plans.

  • Perform, observe and assess a patient's clinical condition, recognizes, identifies and interprets serious situations and immediately decides proper action in accordance to his/her medical training.

  • Perform and administer therapeutic measures in accordance to his/her medical training.

  • Perform coordination activities between providers, nursing and other professional disciplines to provide holistic patient care.

  • Perform and ensure their employee completes the required documents for the character investigation in compliance with Public Law (P.L) 101-630 "Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Act of 1990".

  • Perform cooperation with the appropriate IHS managers when the contractor's employees are subpoenaed or requested by the Tribal, State or Federal Parties to provide testimony as stated in Section 5-27 .3(8)(9) of the Indian Health Manual.

  • Perform medical care to meet physical, emotional, spiritual and sociocultural needs of the patient, by means of direct care and teaching.

  • Perform work with multicultural patients and interpreters as necessary for non-English-speaking patients.


Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license throughout the term of this contract.
  • Must have a current certification by the American Board of Surgery.
  • Must have a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.
  • The Contractor shall read, understand, speak, and write English to effectively communicate with patients and other health care workers, and shall be respectful of the local, American Indian and Alaska Native culture

Education and Experience:

  • Must possess a current, valid, unrestricted license to practice medicine and surgery in a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a Territory of the United States, throughout the term of this contract.
  • Required: Minimum of 24 months experience as a General Physician

Physical Requirements:

  • Must provide a fitness for duty certificate issued by a licensed physician to perform the proposed job without significant risk to personal health or the health and safety of others.
  • Must provide the following documentation:
    • Immunity to Rubella, Mumps, Measles
    • Immunity to Hepatitis B series. A signed declination of the Hepatitis B vaccination series will be accepted
    • History of chicken pox (varicella) disease or positive titer
    • Tdap vaccine required
    • Documentation of receiving a TB Mantoux skin test (PPD) within the past 12 months with documentation of follow-up for a positive test.
    • Current Influenza vaccination

Pre-employment Requirements:

This position may be contingent upon passing a security clearance, background check, drug screen, Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review, or credit check after acceptance of an offer and prior to beginning work, due to the nature of the services Chloeta provides.


Drug and Alcohol Testing:

To enforce Chloeta’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy, an employee or candidate could be subject to undergoing a drug screen and/or alcohol testing during or at the beginning of employment.


Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA):

Under the FCRA, Chloeta may request a credit check during the onboarding process. A written authorization form will be required before obtaining credit records.


Emergency Response:

Every Chloeta employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites. All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official Duty Station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official Position Description (PD). Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions.
