Church Musician

Job Summary:

We are seeking a talented and passionate pianist and/or organist to join our Worship/Music team serving two ELCA Lutheran Churches in the Salem area. As the primary musician, you will be responsible for performing live music at weekly church services and on occasion special services (funerals, holidays, events). Both hymns, and liturgical music selections are foundational to the Sunday services. However, other forms of music are weaved into worship services frequently. There is also interest in providing support for the voice choir (active Fall, Winter, Spring) for rehersal and also during performances during worship.

Duties:

- Provide musical support of weekly Sunday worship services. Hymns, liturgical music, and pre/postlude,.

- Collaborate with pastor and/or worship/music team to plan music accompaniment for Sunday and holiday worship services.

- Support voice choir in rehersal and performance (partial year).

- Practice regularly to maintain and improve musical skills

- Set up and dismantle musical equipment as needed

- Willingness to be available (for supplemental pay) for special services such as funerals, weddings, holidays and church events.

Skills:

- Proficient in playing one or more musical instruments - piano or organ is a must. (e.g., piano, guitar, organ, violin etc.)

- Strong knowledge of music theory and ability to read sheet music and sight read highly desired.

- Excellent improvisation skills & openness sharing variety of music with congregation.

- Ability to adapt to different musical styles and genres and ability to bring reccomendations highly desired.

- Good communication and interpersonal skills

- Ability to work well in a team environment and also excell in self directed work spaces.

Not a requirement to be a practicing Lutheran or Christian but openess to becoming familiar with Lutheran worship services and traditions is highly desired.

Rehersal/practice time during week can be schedule at either church campus. Church will provide materials for all hymns and liturgical music utilized.

Base contract is $120.00 per worship service (with open negotiation of rates for other gigs). This includes pay rate includes prep and planning time.
