Departmental Objective
The Office of Human Resources (HR) at Christopher Newport University helps create, instill and foster a phenomenal culture and community to work and learn by attracting, hiring, supporting, developing, and serving highly talented caring and committed employees.

Purpose of the Position
Provides quality customer service for all benefits, especially in the areas of leave, health care, retirement, life and optional life insurance, LTD, tax-sheltered annuities, and deferred compensation reporting to the Benefits Manager. Ensures the timely and accurate reporting of leave for the University’s classified, administrative/professional and instructional faculty using the state Cardinal system. Serves as the state Cardinal TL_Administrator (time and attendance administrator). Provides back-up support as required for tracking FMLA and leaves/disablity/LWOP management for classified, hourly, administrative/professional and instructional faculty. Provides back-up to Workers’ Compensation reporting and other services to CNU employees and serves as a back-up CNU Return to Worker Coordinator.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) and/or Competencies required and preferred
Required: Extensive knowledge and skills in building relationships and administering benefits, leave and timekeeping. Extensive knowledge, skills and abilities in the operation and maintenance of complex spreadsheets and databases. Knowledge, skills and abilities in the operation and maintenance of state benefits systems. Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks to meet critical payroll deadlines. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal with the ability to communicate with all levels of employees. Excellent time management skills. Ability to develop and maintain exemplary relations with co-workers, vendors and all levels of employees. Prior experience in Workers’ Compensation reporting and administration. Ability to work additional hours as necessary to meet high quality service expectations as well as time and attendance administration.

Preferred: Extensive knowledge and familiarity with Commonwealth of Virginia benefit programs. Ability to read and interpret complex policies and procedures and provide guidance to managers, supervisors and employees.

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Required
Required Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Required Experience: Experience using databases and spreadsheets. Experience working with benefits (such as workers comp, health care, retirement plans, leave and disability, or FMLA). Experience working with the public in a customer service position.

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Preferred
Preferred Education: Bachelor’s degree in business, human resources, psychology, or related field.

Preferred Experience: Experience administering Commonwealth of Virginia benefits. Experience in working with health care plans. Experience working with retirement plans. Experience working with leave and disability plans. Experience working with timekeeping systems.
