Job Details
Under the direction of the supervisor, in addition to specimen accession, the Laboratory Assistant maintains and coordinates all inquiries regarding specimen collection and processing for the laboratory. The Laboratory Assistant supports the Pathologists, Technologists and technicians in preparing Pathology and Autopsy tissues for examination by the Pathologist and accessions specimens and performs varied non-licensed duties including; filing, verifies case completion prior to specimen disposal, stainer maintenance, tissue processor maintenance and accessioning.
- Performs general clerical duties including filing, processing lab specimens
- Able to utilize LIS and able to handle all phone calls. Locates sorts and files needed information, materials or records and paperwork, both medical and general.
- Able to operate office equipment.
- Deals with the public i.e.- answering telephones, interaction with physician’s offices, etc. in a courteous and professional manner.
- Prepares reports at patient & institution requests.
- Accessions test requests in LIS, reference lab systems.
- Assists in preparing samples for analysis- i.e. – bar coding, and distribution.
- Reviews request forms for completion and compliance.
- Distributes mail to proper departments along with collating reference laboratory reports.
- Exhibits initiative to increase his/her knowledge through on the job training and in-service programs.
- Participates in Departmental Q.A. program.
- Has a thorough understanding of all procedures and consistently follows them.
- Maintains equipment and ensures that departmental supplies are stocked and well maintained. Notifies area supervisor when insufficient
- Demonstrates knowledge of service priorities, work routines, and workflow patterns; monitors workflow to assure prompt and efficient delivery of services
- Demonstrates the ability to evaluate departmental performance and recommends measures to improve services and quality of current methodologies
- Demonstrates knowledge of designated laboratory section and competence in all required procedures in accordance with institutional policies.
- Demonstrates the ability to follow all OSHA and NCCLS regulations concerning infectious laboratory waste.
- Regularly required to pick up specimens from various departments of the hospital, including but not limited to the operating room, endoscopy, procedural areas, units, etc
Education:
High School or Equivalent
*Prior laboratory and clerical experience preferred
Salary Range
USD $25.54 - USD $25.54 /Hr.
