Description: CIPE Africa seeks an intern to provide portfolio support to the Accountability, Governance, and Integrity (AGI) and Trade teams in Spring 2023. The intern will support preparation of research, content for publications, and presentations related to Business Integrity, Anti-corruption Economic Development, and Trade in Africa. The AGI program works to strengthen the potential of the African private sector to combat corruption. The Trade program is working to empower the African private sector to take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and establish multi-stakeholder dialogue platforms that will improve the voices of MSMEs, civil society, and marginalized groups in the democratic governance process.  Through this internship, the intern will have the opportunity to gain both technical and general professional skills. 

Reports To: Program Associate, Africa  

Learning Objectives:  

  • Learn about CIPE’s Africa Regional programs and activities 

  • Improved understanding of the functioning and role of an international development corporation 

  • Strengthen research and communication skills, as demonstrated through blog posts, press releases, or briefings 

  • Learn, through direct participation, about coordinating with cross-functional teams and with external partners 

  • Develop professional competencies and productive work habits while working in a diverse team across multiple countries 

  • Learn how to collaborate with a team and define priorities and responsibilities 

  • Direct exposure to project/program cycle management, including project implementation, and monitoring 

Key Areas of Responsibility:  

  • Undertake research on key issues for the Trade and AGI teams (i.e. economic development and integration, business integrity, anti-corruption etc.) 

  • Support implementation of the Ethics 1st podcast and other communication efforts including blog entries, articles, short briefs on topics directly related to AGI and Trade programs 

  • Draft reports related to the work and achievements of the Africa team and its partners 

  • Create social media content highlighting the AGI and Trade programs 

  • Assist in the organization of program events that may take place during the internship duration 

  • Participate in team meetings and CIPE-wide events, when possible 

  • Virtually “Shadow” CIPE Africa staff by sitting in on meetings and phone calls, as appropriate, to provide feedback on and track next steps and follow up 

Qualifications and Requirements:  

  • A Bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields is required: International Relations, International Business, Economic Development, Finance, Political Science, Public Policy, Law, Communications or a related field 

  • A background or substantial experience in communications 

  • Experience organizing events (virtual and in-person) is an advantage 

  • Strong computer skills, MS Office, WordPress, Excel, and willingness to integrate new software programs into their workflow 

  • Strong English writing and research skills 

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills in a multicultural environment 

  • Demonstrates strong critical thinking and analytical skills.  

 

All CIPE Spring 2023 internships will be remote, though interns may come into the CIPE office if they choose. Interns who plan to visit the office will be asked to submit a vaccination card or a request for reasonable accommodation. This is a paid internship.
