About Our Job The Denver Police Department's Victim Assistance Unit (VAU) is seeking to fill a Victim Advocate Lead position. This position will require coverage of some weekend holiday shifts, and on-call coverage. This position will provide advocacy, support and assistance to victims and witness(s) of domestic violence related crimes. Provide awareness and education to victims of crime of the Criminal Justice System to include culturally sensitive services. The Victim Assistance Unit is part of the Crisis Services Bureau of the Denver Police Department. Our VAU program has been in existence for over 35 years and is one of the most extensive in the Nation. We are a unique City which focuses on the importance and priority of victim services. While the use of Marijuana is legal in the State of Colorado, its use is strictly prohibited for Employees of the Denver Police Department. Applicants should not have used marijuana in the past year. Job responsibilities include: Develops or modifies work plans, methods, and procedures, determines work priorities, and develops work schedules to provide adequate staff coverage including weekends/staff on PTO. Facilitates team and staff meetings as assigned. Represents the agency in meetings, trainings, and forums. Develops processes, provides work instructions, and assists employees with difficult and/or unusual assignments. The leads staff cases with the advocates daily and give suggestions and input concerning risk factors and resources. Maintains a caseload. Advises supervisor of unusual problems or deviations from guidelines, precedents and/or practices before being initiated. Assigns and distributes work, reviews work for accuracy and completeness, and returns assignments with recommendations for proper completion. Resolves problems encountered during daily operations and determines appropriate solutions. Contributes to the development of the performance enhancement plan, documents performance, provides performance feedback, and furnishes information for the formal performance evaluation. Responds orally to informal grievances and relays information to the supervisor. Document situations which may be cause for disciplinary action and provides this information to the supervisor. Participates in collaborative, multidisciplinary team meetings and projects. Provides trainings in collaborative meetings and assists with meeting facilitation. Develops training tools, work products, and research resources that help the team in the performance of their duties. Provides training and instruction of job duties to staff. Trains volunteers and interns on courtroom procedures/decorum and advocacy skills needed to work with crime victims. Provides and facilitates trainings in the community or in collaborative meetings and offers mentorship to team members. Explains restitution options available to victims and assists with the completion of requisite paperwork. Performs Victim Advocate essential job duties as needed or assigned. Performs other related duties as assigned. Employees may be re-deployed to work in other capacities in their own agencies or in other City agencies to support core functions of the City during a City-wide emergency declared by the Mayor. Experience Requirement: Eight (8) years of paid or volunteer human services experience providing casework, case management, victim advocacy or other trauma-informed services to the victims of violent or non-violent crimes. One year of supervisory and/or lead worker experience. Education and Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements. License/Certification Requirement: By position, requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
