DIRECTOR OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES

MALCOLM X COLLEGE


Malcolm X College is currently seeking a Director of Student Activities. the Director, Student Activities is responsible for the strategic planning and development of co-curricular programming, working collaboratively with students, faculty and college administrators to implement events and activities that encourages student engagement, provide enriching experiences, and enhance students overall learning and development.


The Director, Student Activities serves as the advisor to the Student Government Association (SGA), providing guidance and support to student officers on effectiveness, budgeting, organization, policies and procedures. The position also works with and supports students and faculty advisors in the development, recognition, and maintenance of student clubs, groups, and organizations. Perform related duties as required.


Position requires flexible work hours; must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends. Some off-campus and overnight travel is required.


Student engagement, learning and development, and leadership are the focus of student activities at City Colleges of Chicago (CCC). Each campus has a Student Government Association (SGA) whose elected student officers serve as a liaison between the student body and college administration and the Board of Trustees. In addition, each campus has clubs, groups, and organizations that provide cultural, social, educational and leadership opportunities to students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Advocates for the co-curricular needs of students, leading efforts to promote holistic student development and ensuring a student learning and development approach to events and activities that are responsive to student interests and needs.
  • Cultivates partnerships and serves on committees with faculty, staff, and college administrators to support the planning and implementation of student events and activities hosted/funded by various departments.
  • Plans, implements, and coordinates campus events / activities, and supports other functions of the Office of Student Activities. Responsible for all aspects of operations to include budget development, procurement, marketing and logistics, including facility and equipment use.
  • Serves as the advisor to the campus’s Student Government Association (SGA), providing leadership, guidance, and support to student officers, and serving as a resource on SGA guidelines, operations, responsibilities, and goals.
  • Works with SGA officers in the management of the SGA budget, advising and providing guidelines on the allocation of funds to accounts, the use and distribution of funds to clubs, groups, and organizations. Tracks budget expenditures and directs all procurement activities.
  • Advises and supports students interested in forming new clubs, groups, and organizations, providing information on recognition procedures, including the application process, obtaining a faculty advisor, preparing a club constitution, and related documents.
  • Conducts annual reviews of the operations of student clubs, groups, and organizations to ensure they fulfill the requirements and conditions outlined by CCC and SGA guidelines.
  • Provides orientations and training to student leaders and faculty advisors on the management and operations of a club, group, or organization, and the duties and responsibilities of student leaders in planning and maximizing their operational effectiveness.
  • Identifies development opportunities for student leaders to attend including conferences and leadership trainings. Travels to off-campus events and conferences with students. Obtains funding, prepares paperwork, and makes travel arrangements.
  • Works with student clubs, groups and organizations regarding programming initiatives and use of funds. Provides functional event support, assisting them in planning, budgeting and executing events and activities.
  • Participates in developing student learning outcomes and tools to effectively assess student activities and events.
  • Conducts outreach to promote events/activities. Creates and distributes a monthly calendar of events and publicizes events/activities via student email and social media (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram). May prepare department newsletter or other communication to promote activities.
  • Establishes procedures to archive and retrieve SGA and clubs, groups, and organizations documents to ensure historical context is understood and year-to-year continuity is viable.
  • Conducts regular meetings with SGA officers, student leaders and faculty advisors. Monitors operations to ensure compliance with CCC’s Academic & Student policy, Board policies and procedures, student club operational manual, and SGA guidelines.
  • Supervises staff assigned to the Office of Student Activities.
  • The management of Ventra U-Pass for students is a function shared by varying degrees between the Office of Student Services and other departments based on a college’s operational needs. As directed, the position performs and oversees the eligibility review and processing of Ventra U-Pass Card requests; distributes cards to eligible students; and troubleshoots issues.
  • May participate and provide support, activities or presentations to other college programs and events such as student orientations or alumni events.
  • May oversee operations of a campus’ Student Activities Center (e.g. student union, game room, recreational center, etc.), overseeing staff and ensuring adherence to rules and procedures for use of facilities by students.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Master’s degree from and accredited college or university in Higher Education, Student Personnel, Student Development, Student Affairs, or a related field.
  • Three years of work experience in a higher education setting involving student affairs, student activities, student development or a related area.
  • Must have proven experience in budget administration and fiscal management.
  • Demonstrated experience with strategic planning, resource management, development and implementation of student leadership programs.
  • Understanding of social media as it is used in student activities
  • Proven leadership and organizational skills with a commitment to the academic achievement and personal growth of students.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
