This is entrance level technical work in engineering and architecture.

 

An employee in this class functions in a support capacity performing construction inspection, materials testing, research, computer aided drafting, calculations, plan reviews and field survey work in conjunction with the various phases of public improvement projects.

 

Works under general supervision commonly exercising independence in the use of judgment and ingenuity.  Work is reviewed for completeness and accuracy.  Duties may require working in inclement weather.



Conducts inspections of construction projects such as parking decks, sewer lines, bridges, highways, lighting, water lines, sidewalks and buildings.  Interprets and monitors adherence to federal, state, and local rules, regulations, and standards, as well as contents and requirements of plans, specifications and other technical data relating to construction activity.  Certifies quality of materials and work.  Certifies quantity of materials used for monthly payments to contractors.  Prepares a variety of manual and computerized reports and records.  Records work completion information onto permanent records.   Conducts condition inspection tests on existing structures and quality control tests on construction materials.   Assists in project design by calculating grades, elevations, areas and curves, and performing other standard calculations and cost estimating.  Prepares construction plans following standard guidelines and procedures.  Uses computerized drafting procedures to prepare and update a variety of routine drawings, records, maps and plans.   Serves as a member of a surveying crew.   Answers questions from the general public on engineering activities and assists in handling complaints from the public and persons affected by project activity.  May be assigned to specialized programs for industrial pretreatment, backflow prevention, GIS, or safety.  Drives to meetings and worksites.  Performs related work as required.
 

 



Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate degree in construction technology, construction engineering technology, or construction management, or an equivalent combination of paid experience and training.  THE EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT MEANS THAT YOU MAY SUBSTITUTE UP TO 50% OF EDUCATION WITH PAID EXPERIENCE. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license.


Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials and practices used in the design and construction of civil engineering projects.   Considerable knowledge of engineering mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry.  Knowledge of computerized drafting procedures, materials, tools and equipment.  Knowledge of surveying practices, equations, signs and symbols.
 
Ability to interpret and enforce the contents and requirements of construction regulations, plans and specifications.   Ability to prepare drawings and data in a neat, orderly and accurate manner.  Ability to effectively operate standard drafting and surveying equipment.   Ability to perform a variety of basic engineering mathematical calculations and computations common to civil engineering projects.  Ability to effectively maintain records and prepare accurate and concise reports both manually and by computer.  Ability to establish and maintain courteous, tactful and effective public relations.   Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.  List of essential job functions available upon request.

The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education.  A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education.  TEST WEIGHTS:  Competitive Examination 80%, Education 20%.  

Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.

NOTE: The competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates.  The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 80% for qualifying and 20% for education.

RESIDENCY:  Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.  

VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.

DRIVER'S LICENSE:  An applicant having a valid driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment.  Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
