What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Worker, Senior, Parks and Recreation position at City of Alexandria, LA?
The purpose of this classification is to perform semi-skilled to skilled work functions associated with construction, maintenance, landscaping, and grounds-keeping of city infrastructure, utilities, facilities, and property. Positions in the Wastewater Department are subject to 24-hour call.
Performs skilled concrete finishing work to construct, install, repair road, drainage, and utility infrastructure (e.g. streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, catch basins, grates, culverts, bulkheads, drop inlets, pipes, driveways, etc.): builds concrete forms and drainage boxes; mixes, pours, and finishes concrete; adapts different drainage and structural apparatus; cleans, maintains, and repairs drains; repairs concrete pipes; repairs, maintains, and cleans ditches; lays street bricks; and performs various related functions required to complete assigned projects.
Performs semi-skilled work related to maintenance and repair of roadways: lays, smoothes, and repairs asphalt and concrete; patches/repairs potholes and sinkholes; grades work sites; packs ground materials; installs reflective markers in streets; paints markings such as turn lanes, crosswalks, and parking spaces onto road surfaces; builds, repairs, and paints street barricades; assists with the maintenance of street signal lights; and removes debris from sites of vehicle accidents.
Performs various manual work functions associated with tree maintenance: sets up equipment, harnesses, and safety gear; climbs trees; fells trees and/or trims branches; utilizes chain saws, pole saws, stump grinders, and industrial chippers to cut and grind up debris; and performs manual tasks to lift/move heavy materials, dig holes, and removes debris.
Tasks may require working around power lines and in high places.
Performs skilled maintenance work at municipal ball fields in mowing grass, painting field lines, aerating and watering fields as needed, and related tasks, per established standards.
Performs semi-skilled maintenance work to assist with the skilled repair of electrical, HVAC, utilities, and mechanical systems; performs painting, plumbing, carpentry, plastering, and electrical work that does not require a licensed technician; assists in the reconditioning of tools and mechanical equipment; cuts sheet metal, installs insulation, pulls, cuts and splices wires, and lubricates machinery; and performs related tasks.
Performs manual and physical work functions associated with construction, maintenance and repair of public roads and utility infrastructure, which may include repairing roads/asphalt, digging, patching holes, compacting road surfaces, maintaining drainage systems, installing/repairing pipe, constructing/repairing ditches, clearing drainage obstructions, clearing ditches/gutters, breaking up pipes and concrete, cutting pipes, installing fences, spreading asphalt/road materials, digging holes or trenches, shoveling materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, assisting electric line crews, and flagging traffic.
Performs manual work functions associated with routine maintenance and upkeep of public parks, grounds and facilities: mows lawns; trims and edges grass; blows leaves from walkways; plants, prunes, and maintains plants, trees and shrubs; spreads mulch; rakes leaves; clears debris; and performs related tasks.
Removes litter, debris, and deceased animals from municipal parks, recreational facilities, roadways, community centers, and other city property.
Transports, loads and unloads various materials and equipment used in projects; stock work trucks with needed supplies and equipment.
Prepares facilities for meetings and related functions; loads, unloads, sets up, and erects area bleachers, chairs, tables, stages, and other required equipment and fixtures; moves furniture and equipment; assists in setting up special events/activities; installs, erects, or hangs holiday decorations; assists with traffic control during event; assists with cleanup after events.
Cleans public restrooms in parks and recreational facilities, shop and work areas and other city facilities; sweeps and mops floors; dusts and cleans offices, meeting rooms, or other work areas; strips, waxes, and polishes floors; polishes furniture; collects and removes waste; washes windows and walls; cleans restrooms and replenishes supplies.
Operates a variety of power equipment, machinery and hand tools used in department projects and activities, which may include pick-up truck, trailer, mower, tiller, weed eater, edger, blower, asphalt packer, cement mixer, jack hammer, chain saw, saw, axe, shovel, rake, spraying equipment, and various tools.
Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fuel and fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
Responds to emergency calls during inclement weather or other emergency situations.
Utilizes precautionary safety equipment and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
Receives, prepares or completes various forms and documentation, including work orders, time cards, maintenance reports, spray records, diagrams, maps, manuals, reference materials, and other documents; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems; communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.
High school diploma or GED preferred; supplemented by two (2) years of experience in construction and maintenance of public infrastructure, utilities, facilities, and property; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana Class D driver’s license within one (1) month of employment and maintain throughout employment for this classification. May be required to obtain Flagging certification.
Electric Distribution Department must obtain and maintain a valid Louisiana Class B commercial driver's license within six (6) months of employment.
Wastewater Department may be required to obtain and maintain a valid Louisiana Class A or B commercial driver’s license.
Prefers a valid Wastewater Collection Class I Certification.Water Department prefers a valid Water Production/Treatment or Distribution Class I Certification.
Gas Department must obtain certifications as required by the Office of Pipeline Safety within six (6) months of hire.
