What are the responsibilities and job description for the Survey Party Chief position at City of Alexandria, VA?
A Survey Party Chief provides supervision to a field survey crew and conducts all manner of field surveys for the City of Alexandria. An employee in this class, along with his/her crew, is responsible for the performance of field surveying associated with all City projects including but not limited to street, curb and gutter, sewer, waterfront, utility, park, bridge and tunnel construction. Assignments also include boundary, topography, and as-built surveys. Assignments are received from either the Chief of Surveys or the Land Survey Analyst either orally or in writing accompanied by sketches, a set of plans, plats, or computation sheets. The limits of the survey are usually pre-established. The use of approved methods and procedures and the performance of the survey crew are the responsibility of the Survey Party Chief. Survey results are reviewed by the Land Survey Analyst, the Chief of Surveys, or engineering staff for accuracy, efficiency, and conformance with established techniques. Tasks are performed under the general supervision of the Chief of Surveys.
The Opportunity
- Conducts surveys and provides supervision to a field survey crew to ensure that all manner of field surveys for the City of Alexandria are conducted in a thorough, safe, and timely manner and in line with industry standards;
- Receives direction from Land Survey Analyst and Chief of Survey concerning field survey scope and standards, coordinates and communicates the results of field survey to ensure accurate and thorough deliverable
- Conducts solo, robotic surveys as needed
- Performs mathematical computations related to survey operations, and utilizes appropriate technology;
- Utilizes all manners of current technology, hardware, and software to collect and organize data, downloads results for use by the Land Survey Analysts to prepare Topographic Map and other survey drawings;
- Provides training to subordinate crew members including survey theory, survey operations, and survey technology;
- Troubleshoot survey equipment and software to address any complications that arise
- Ensures that survey instruments and equipment are properly adjusted and maintained;
- Monitors survey truck condition, informs superiors of any concerns, coordinates repair with City mechanics;
- Performs related work as required.

Minimum & Additional Requirements
To qualify for this position, all candidates must possess a High School Diploma or GED, with high school courses in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry; and three years of land surveying experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
To be considered an ideal candidate, one should have a minimum of one year’s experience at the Survey Party Chief level or higher (ie survey analyst/PM).
