Class Title: MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR
Grade Number: 11N
Department: Bureau of Streets, PA Liquid Fuels, Recycling and Solid Waste
GENERAL PURPOSE
The work in this class involves overseeing the work of several crews engaged in public works activities such as street cleaning, leaf collection, street repair and snow removal. Assist the Chief Maintenance Supervisors in the daily planning and organizing of work crews, reports on daily activities through daily reports and departmental meetings.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Employee works under the supervision of the Chief Maintenance Supervisor and Streets Superintendent.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervision is exercised over the work of Equipment Operators, Maintenance Workers, Laborers and others engaged in public works activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assign employees and equipment to streets department projects, providing supervision and direction in the maintenance, inspection, repair, cleaning, and construction of streets, alleys, bridges, and related facilities.
Employee must coordinate the use of available equipment, materials and manpower to obtain maximum effectiveness and economy.
Inspect ongoing projects for progress and completed projects for conformance to work plans.
Enforce safety rules for worksites including the placement of proper signage and traffic control devises for the work-zone is placed and all proper safety equipment is worn by personnel.
Resolve performance problems with employees through training and counseling and administer discipline as necessary.
Keep daily records and makes reports as needed.
During winter months may be required to supervise middle or night shifts.
Schedule employees for overtime and callout work following procedures set by Streets Superintendent.
Overtime will be required during emergency/nonemergency situations including night shift and
weekends.
Stand-by work is required.
Provide quality and effective customer service with courtesy and understanding to our customers, citizens and internal departments.
Performs related work as may be required.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
(A) Graduation from high school.
(B) Minimum of 3 years of experience in street construction work.
(C) General knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.
(D) Equivalent combination of related education and experience.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
(A) Thorough knowledge of the materials, methods, equipment and practices of street maintenance.
(B) General knowledge of Microsoft Excel, and Word.
(C) Knowledge of right-to-know laws as instructed and posted.
(D) Employee must show some ability to input and extract data from computer database using queries and reports.
(E) Ability to help plan, coordinate, inspect and schedule the work of street employees.
(F) Ability to interpret and work from sketches, pencil layouts and blueprints.
(G) Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, superiors and the general public.
(H) Employee must be capable of assisting the Chief Maintenance Supervisor in total quality management and performance of all services regarding street bureau activities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid Class A CDL drivers license with Air Brake and Tanker endorsements.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Require daily use of personal computer, phone, fax machine, radio, copier, scanner, printer, laminator, shredder automobile, plans and drawings, string-lines, line-levels and foot-rules. Occasionally uses all types of equipment/vehicles and tools to train employees.

During certain times of year the employee frequently works in the vicinity of hot materials that without wearing the proper clothing or proper safety equipment could cause severe burns. The employee frequently works around heavy equipment.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud but occasionally quiet.
