Heavy Equipment Operator

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

· Expert operation of heavy equipment as listed above.

· Skilled operation of other equipment, including Class 8 trucks used in
construction/maintenance tasks related to Public Works operations, including
loading soil materials from a stockpile or gravel pit, ditching, installation of
culverts, placement/compaction of pavement or gravel, road and sidewalk
repairs/construction and placement or removal of curbing.

· Skilled operation of other equipment, including Class 8 trucks used in the winter
snow operations related to Public Works, i.e. sanding, plowing and snow/ice
removal from City streets.

· Skilled operation of other equipment, including Class 8 trucks, used in the solid
waste operations, such as waste placement, handling/transportation of soil
materials and separated waste materials for recycling.

· Operation of small hand operated equipment, i.e. compressor and attachments,
“quick-cut” saws, chainsaws, pavement and earth compactors such as hand tamps
or “jumping jacks.”

· Reports any equipment malfunction or noted maintenance item to immediate
supervisor or another supervisor if immediate supervisor is unavailable.

· Performs various manual labor tasks at times.

· Performs related work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED:

· Knowledge of equipment (both hand-operated and heavy equipment) and hand
and power tools, materials, methods and practices as related to the public works o
or solid waste facility operations.

· Knowledge of outdoor construction and winter maintenance machines and tools,
including their intended uses and capabilities, repair, and maintenance.

· Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools and equipment used
in the construction/maintenance fields and winter maintenance activities related
to sanding, plowing and snow/ice removal.

· Skill in controlling operations of equipment and/or systems.

· Skill in determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.

· Skill in watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is
working properly.

· Ability to quickly and repeatedly make precise adjustments in moving the controls
of a machine or vehicle to exact positions.

· Ability to see details at a distance and react quickly if needed to avoid potential
problems or hazards.

· Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, plans, sketches,
and drawings.

· Ability to use a hand-held level, laser or transit to place or check grades.

· Ability to interact effectively and courteously with coworkers and the public.

· Ability to identify common occupational hazards and utilize safe work practices.

· Ability to participate in the drug and alcohol-testing program prescribed by FHWA
rules and the City of Augusta Alcohol and Drug Policy.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $21.34 - $26.67 per hour
