Austin Animal Center‘s mission is to enhance the lives of pets and people by preventing animal homelessness, to help lost pets find their way home or find new homes, to provide education and resources to preserve the human-animal bond, and to administer animal-related ordinances to ensure public and animal safety, all while achieving a 95% live outcome rate for sheltered pets.

What is the Job?

As a Public Health Educator focusing on the Animal Services Outreach in Austin, your role is pivotal in managing the community animal population through community education. This involves outreach via TV, radio, social media, and door-to-door initiatives, as well as handling dogs and transporting them to events or TV stations. Your efforts aim to increase microchipping of pets, wildlife knowledge, promoting spaying and neutering, and raising awareness about available resources. Leading new volunteer orientations, participating in community events, building relationships with local organizations, and staying updated with best practices through continuous education are essential to the role.

Additional Information: Animal Service Office worksite locations are tobacco-free. Use of tobacco products and/or e-cigarettes is not permitted on any ASO worksite - including construction sites, parking lot, or in any personal vehicle located on the premises.

Pay Range

$25.40 - $30.10

Hours

This position will work 40 hours per week.

Evenings and weekends may be required on a regular basis. The shelter is open on some City of Austin official holidays. Other days and hours may be required during an emergency response situation.

  • Demonstrated experience with program development with a focus on pet retention and resources for diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure resources for pet owners from public and private entities.
  • Ability to travel to multiple sites.
  • Ability to handle animals of various sizes.
  • Bilingual - Spanish.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

Write informational reports. Refer citizens to appropriate agency or program. Develop and evaluate plans, criteria, etc. for variety of projects, program activities, etc. Speak as city representative before public groups. Conduct needs assessments. Evaluate programs for effectiveness and accomplishment of goals. Evaluate needs assessment data to determine course of action i.e. training, new program, etc. Plan and develop survey instruments, i.e. questionnaires, rating scales, etc., and methodology for use. Develop and conduct public information and education programs. Design visual presentation materials

  • Knowledge of training methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of appropriate community resources for client referral.
  • Knowledge of epidemiology, infectious diseases and the appropriate treatments.
  • Knowledge of functions and operations of interrelating departments, divisions and agencies.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulatory agency requirements.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of the field of environmental health services.
  • Knowledge of the laws and regulations governing communicable disease control.
  • Knowledge of contract language.
  • Skill in resolving problems or situations requiring the exercise of good judgment.
  • Skill in effective oral and/or written communication.
  • Skill in effectively communication and dealing with the public.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining good working relationships with other City departments, employees and the public.
  • Skill in maintaining records.
  • Skill in preparing clear and concise written reports.
  • Skill in giving public presentations.
  • Skill in communicating requirements both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in self-study and in the completion of assigned training.
