Job Description

The City of Avondale is currently seeking a Temporary Fire Inspector to join the Fire & Medical Services Department. This is a temporary, part-time position working a minimum of 20 hours per week with the potential to work up to 40 hours per week, depending on business needs.

Hours of Operation are Monday -Thursday 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

The first review of applications will be on Monday, May 20, 2024, and weekly thereafter.

Inspects residential and commercial building projects. Incumbents may be required to read blueprints; conduct fire safety inspections of new and existing facilities; and conduct acceptance tests of fire protection systems. Have the ability to prepare violation notices and inspection reports and enter information into a computerized database. Research fire code violations and provide direction and/or technical assistance to internal and external customers to correct identified violations, investigate citizen complaints involving fire safety or hazardous conditions, and assist with fire code plan reviews and education programs as needed. Performs related duties as assigned. The description/qualifications for this position should be in conformance with NFPA 1031 (Fire Inspector).

Essential Functions

Inspects existing residential and commercial buildings by verifying compliance with all applicable city, state, and federal codes and ordinances.

Inspects new construction projects for fire code compliance according to NFPA 1031.

Educates business owners, homeowners, and the general public on fire life safety, including fire prevention and the basics of how fire protection systems work.

Writes detailed inspection reports, maintains appropriate records and files, and enters inspection information into data systems.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED equivalency is required.

Two (2) years of experience working as a Fire Inspector I.

ICC or NFPA Certification for Fire Inspector I.

Valid Arizona Operator’s Driver’s License.

Supplemental Information

Work requires the ability to read blueprints and codes.

Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Work requires the ability to write violation notices, reports, and cards.

Planning responsibilities include organizing daily routes for applicable time constraints.

The work is governed by broad instructions, objectives, policies and it requires the exercise of considerable initiative and independent analytical and evaluative judgment.

The incumbents in this position contact others within the organization. These contacts may involve similar work units or other departments within the City such as building safety which may be involved in decision-making or providing approval or decision-making authority for purchases or projects. In addition, the incumbent will work with individuals outside of the City who may belong to professional or peer organizations and with various state and federal agencies. The incumbent will be responsible for conducting meetings and discussions with customers and the general public.

The employee must maintain regular attendance and the ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
