Parks and Recreation Intern is an introductory position that supports staff to ensure superior delivery of parks and recreation services. They will provide support and customer service at special events, sports leagues, tournaments, facility rentals, and other recreational programs as needed.
Interns may additionally assist in the promotion, coordination, and implementation of recreational activities such as special events, instructional activities, and adult and youth programs. Responsibilities can include purchasing supplies, handling vendor inquiries, procurement of services, and assisting with other special projects as assigned. Interns may also serve in a lead capacity to part-time employees and volunteers by serving as an onsite supervisor and ensuring staff coverage at activities, parks, and events.
This is a full-time position with no benefits that will work 40 hours per week over a 12-14-week period, based on university requirements. Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments. May be performed at various locations.
SUPERVISION: Reports to the Recreation Manager
SELECTION CRITERIA: Applicants whose experience and training are most closely suited to the needs of the City will be selected for interviews. Criteria will be based on the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for the position. A resume, cover letter, and City application are required.
Observe, monitor, and/or assist participants in recreation activities.
Assists in planning, preparing, and promoting programs, activities, and events.
Serves as a scorekeeper or official for various adult/youth athletic sports programs; responsible for being prompt and professional during all activities, interact with coaches, parents, and other staff and participants.
Complete and file accident and statistical reports, incidents, and issues pertaining to program proceedings as required.
Open and close facilities. Perform on-site inspections and evaluations to ensure compliance with rules, regulations, and City safety policies and procedures.
Provide general cleanup of grounds and facilities including, but not limited to, restrooms, dugouts, and parking lots utilizing various manually operated tools.
Provide clerical support by answering phones, filing documents, counter reception, and various other duties.
Communicate with the general public and provide excellent customer service.
Supervises the distribution, care, use, and maintenance of supplies and equipment for assigned programs, events, and facilities.
Requires minimum completion of junior year in college in Recreation Administration or a related field or any combination of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work. Preferred:

Valid Arizona Driver's License required. Must be able to obtain First Aid/CPR certification within 3 months of hire.
Work requires the ability to read rosters and correspondence (i.e., e-mails) from the recreation office.
Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and percentages.
Work requires the ability to write simple instructions or guides.
Must be able to work with citizens or participants in accordance with recreation policies and procedures.
Works require the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, volunteers, or temporary employees. Must maintain regular attendance. Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner. Ability to work a flexible work schedule that changes based on program needs.
