What are the responsibilities and job description for the Facilities Maintenance Custodian position at CITY OF BEDFORD?
SUMMARY
Provides all janitorial services for the City. Performs general custodial duties, minor maintenance and other miscellaneous duties in order to ensure that municipal buildings and facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe and sanitary manner. Duties include cleaning rooms/ offices, operating vacuum cleaner and floor buffer, emptying trash, setting up and taking down tables and chairs and other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Cleans and cares for buildings and facilities to ensure they are maintained in a safe and healthy manner.
- Performs all janitorial services for the facility including cleaning offices and rooms of the building by vacuuming carpets, dusting, mopping and/or buffing floors, wiping down tables and counter tops, emptying trash, setting up and/or taking down tables, and cleaning glass doors and windows.
- Promptly notifies a supervisor and/or the Facilities Maintenance Department of equipment failures and/or repair issues.
- Reports any damage or acts of vandalism to the Facility Maintenance department.
- Washes and disinfects all washrooms floors, toilets, toilet seats, hand dryers, fixtures, and mirrors.
- Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge about the care and maintenance of Vinyl Composite Tile(VCT) and other hard surface floors; this includes waxing, baffling and general every day care. (All waxing and buffing is to a performed after normal operating hours.)
- Provides minor maintenance to facilities, may assist in painting and other minor facility repairs, such as, changing light bulbs, cleaning diffusers and minor repairs to toilets and urinals.
- Must have experience working with and maintaining floor equipment, such as, buffers, carpet extractors, and auto-scrubbers.
- Maintains inventory and prepares orders for janitorial cleaning and chemical supplies, keeps break rooms and restrooms stocked with paper goods.
- Decides priority of requests and/or tasks.
- Follows established daily cleaning schedule as assigned.
- May perform special assignments and handle special projects, as required.
- Regular and timely attendance is required as well as the ability to get along with others in a professional manner.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma / GED; or one to two years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read a limited number of two- and three syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Texas Driver's License.
SPECIALIZED KSA’S
Basic knowledge of the handling of chemicals and supplies. Working knowledge of custodial responsibilities.
