What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cheer and Dance Instructor (variable) position at City of Bellevue?
We are looking for a positive, energetic cheer and dance instructor to teach youth cheerleading classes and summer camps at our City of Bellevue facilities. This position will be responsible to direct, supervise, coach and oversee the safety of all participants in the cheer program. This position must be able to teach cheer and/or dance classes to groups of children between 5 and 13 years old. A focus of this position will be to attract underrepresented and underserved populations. Candidates must possess excellent communication skills, expertise in cheer and dance, and the ability to work independently. Experience working with sports & recreation programs and diverse youth desired.
** Work hours may vary from season-to-season dependent on program enrollment (may include afternoons, evenings, Saturdays). Work location of position will vary based on program. Summer camp may significantly increase hours worked per week.
- Teach, instruct, or coach participants; provide guidance and support to activity participants. Experience teaching or participating in cheer and dance preferred.
- Lead, train and coordinate program activities, lesson plans, drills and/or skill development. Confident in working and communicating directly with participants during practices.
- Supervise classroom/activity; maintain and secure class roster.
- Oversee program/activity participants; provide instruction, direction and assistance as needed. May require physical demonstration of cheer/dance techniques and routines.
- Ensure program/facility rules, policies and procedures are followed; maintain and enforce safety standards.
- Develop schedules, calendars and lesson plans.
- Ensure proper use, care, and storage of program equipment.
- Assist with program registration and participant inquiries.
- Assist with the promotion and communication of assigned program.
- Knowledge of cheerleading and dance techniques and routines. Experience teaching or participating in cheer and dance preferred.
- Confident in working and communicating directly with participants during practices.
- Coach and instruct participants, individually or in groups, regarding the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
- Experience working with youth and teenagers.
- Must possess effective coaching techniques and skills.
- Develop effective practice plans and organize practices to provide both individual and team development.
- Desire to work with all skill levels and abilities.
- Ability to attract, work with and include youth and teens from diverse backgrounds.
- Present a neat and professional appearance.
- Enthusiastic and positive outlook.
- Embrace individual and group differences.
- Knowledge of the principles, rules, materials and equipment in facility.
- Work effectively and communicate with the public and fellow employees.
- Assist in preparing written reports as assigned.
- Must pass criminal background check prior to being hired.
- Must be 18 years of age to apply.
- CPR and First Aid Certification.
- May be required to work evenings and weekends.
- Majority of time will be spent indoors.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to demonstrate and clearly explain cheer skills to youth participants.
- Will require strenuous activity, including lifting, bending, reaching, and standing for extended periods of time.
- Work involves walking, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.
- Will assist with program preparation, setup, and take down.
- Job tasks involve work with youth of such a nature that the employee may be called on to make physical interventions, push wheelchairs and load vans, etc.
- May be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 40 pounds.
- The noise level in the work environment is varied, but usually moderate to high.
