General Summary:
This position requires routine manual labor involving the performance of a variety of heavy/light cleaning and custodial tasks inside and outside of a public building (s). Assignments are performed in accordance with specific and detailed instructions, or follow an established pattern/procedure. This position may involve daily contact with office personnel, as well as the general public. Task completion/thoroughness is subject to daily/periodic inspection by the appropriate supervisor (s). The assigned tasks are performed somewhat independently. The employee receives his directions from a single designated supervisor.
Essential Job Functions:
- An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties, which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily:
- Sweeps, mops, scrubs, and waxes floors.
- Cleans walls and ceilings, dust furniture and cleans carpet/rugs;
- Washes windows, polishes brass, cleans woodwork, cleans toilets/lavatories, and replenishes supplies;
- Empties wastebaskets, changes light bulbs and runs errands;
- Move/set furniture, fires boilers, and check the proper working of heating/cooling system.
- Shovels snow, cleans walkways, and pick up litter.
- Set up chairs for specialty activities, does occasional painting, carries out minor repairs, and may act as a building watchman.
- May be assigned miscellaneous duties in a department/division in which janitorial services are being performed;
- Also performs other work-related assignments when circumstances require it.
Qualifications:

- Educational requirements include a high school diploma, with experience in the field of janitorial services. An equivalent combination of training and experience is also considered to be acceptable;
- Valid State of Michigan Driver’s license.
- Background knowledge in the area of occupation/health hazards, as well as recommended/approved safety precautions.
- Basic understanding and knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment ordinarily utilized in keeping offices/buildings clean.
- Ability to learn repetitive tasks quickly and be capable of working without continuous or constant supervision.
- Ability to perform moderately heavy manual labor.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required talk, heat and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
