DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Under general supervision, collects samples from industrial, commercial, and domestic dischargers for laboratory and field analysis. Collect samples from industrial, commercial, and domestic dischargers for laboratory and field analysis in accordance with federal, state, and local requirements. Review log books, field data, recordings, and other documentation related to discharges from industrial and commercial sites. Keep detailed, accurate records of field activities and observations, utilizing computer programs. Clean industrial waste sampling equipment and maintain such equipment in proper operating condition. Calibrate sampling and field test equipment for proper usage and keep detailed records on each piece. Shall be required to be on 24-hour call. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Shall perform all other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION REQUIRED: High School diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED). This classification also requires the individual to hold or be able to obtain such certificates or license as may be required by federal, state, or local governments within 2 years of hire date. Completion of California State University Sacramental (CSUS), Office of Water Programs Pretreatment Facility Inspection Correspondence Course within six months of employment and any other CSUS correspondence courses related to the pretreatment and wastewater fields within a reasonable time period not to exceed two (2) years of date of hire. Employee shall obtain the required number of continuing education credited hours for each two (2) year cycle to remain properly certified by the Louisiana Department of Health.
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED: Must have a basic understanding of environmental sampling, analytical reports, and chain of custody procedures. Shall have the ability to read and interpret documents, regulatory requirements, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, etc. Aptitude to calibrate and use the following instruments – pH meter, oxygen meter, chlorine residual, various tape measures, conversion charts (decimal to fraction, fraction to decimal), overhead scale, flow meters, oxygen reduction potential meters (ORP), etc. Reasoning abilities shall include the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal or diagram form. Ability to convey technical information to supervisory and industrial waste pretreatment personnel. The employee must be physically capable of operating the vehicle safely and must possess a valid driver’s license.
