Operational Integrity: Lead Water Operator helps ensures the safe and efficient operation of a potable water supply system.
Supervision: Assists in directing the day-to-day duties of the operations staff, overseeing their activities.
Administrative Duties: Assists in administrative tasks related to water supply operations.
Maintenance: Repair and maintain various equipment.
Emergency response: Respond to Operator and Water Plant emergencies and events during and after hours.
Makes hourly rounds of plant checking and documenting gauge readings and calibrations; adjusts chemical feed rates of plant equipment and checks functioning of meters and pumps
Performs tests on turbidity in raw, settled, and filtered water, chlorine residuals in filtered water, alkalinity levels in raw and filtered water, and records all results Calibrates fluoride meter and tests fluoride residual in raw and filtered water recording results
Backwashes and rewashes filters using a backwash pump
Checks levels of alum, caustic, fluoride, corrosion inhibitor, carbon, coagulant aid, and other chemicals and adds chemicals as needed; calculates chemical dosage from readings, and makes chemical adjustments to ensure optimum plant performance and records results in log book
Prepares reports on chemical usage, physical tests, chemical analysis, turbidity, chlorine, filter operations, lagoon information, CT computation, and fluoride and enters into computer
Gathers water samples from distribution, lagoon, lake, new line, to determine water quality from complaints from the public
Reports equipment failures to the chief water plant operator
Advises plant operators and general maintenance workers of assigned duties, changes in routines, problems, and conducts meetings as required; provides training to plant staff
Maintains plant inventory records, operating and maintenance records, and purchases equipment and supplies
Assists customers, answering phones, and provides information in response to questions
Enforces compliance with OSHA and other safety standards
On-call duty response for after hours, weekends and holidays
Thorough knowledge of State and Federal water treatment and water quality regulations
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and necessary safety precautions
Considerable knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a water treatment plant and treatment regimens
General knowledge of physics, chemistry, and biology
Ability to make decisions on water quality and supply in the absence of the chief operator
Ability to conduct routine water quality tests, accurately read meters and charts, and form conclusions and make operating decisions based on results
Ability to perform algebraic calculations and maintain detailed records
Ability to detect problems in the operation of mechanical equipment, perform preventive maintenance on equipment, and take corrective actions
Ability to receive and implement instructions provided by the chief water plant operator
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other City employees and the general public
Ability to supervise Facility employees
Ability to respond to Water Plant emergency during off work hours (On-call)
High School Diploma or GED equivalency and considerable work experience in a water treatment facility.
Valid North Carolina Driver's
License Surface Water "B" Certificate
First Aid and CPR Certificate
Lives within 25 miles of the Water Plant
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Work in this class is described as strenuous.
Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
Work necessitates visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned in preparing and analyzing figures, accounting, transcription, computer terminal viewing and extensive reading, conduct visual inspection of small defects or parts, operate a machine, use measurement devices, and to assemble parts at distances close to the eyes.
Employee is subject to hazards including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, noise, vibration, oils, and atmospheric conditions.
Employee is required to wear a respirator when necessary. Employee may frequently work in close quarters, crawl space, shafts, manholes, small enclosed rooms, small sewage and water lines, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia.
Employee is required to function in narrow aisles, passageways, and catwalks. Working conditions include both inside and outside environmental conditions.
