Nature of Work
Essential Duties
2. Climb onto and climb down from lifeguard stand, if and when necessary, jump from stand to rescue or assist anyone who may encounter difficulties.
3. Learn all the beach rules and regulations and via conversation or use of megaphone, inform swimmers and area users of the regulations and enforce them.
4. Recognize and mitigate dangerous or threatening situations, impede prohibited activities and keep area users within marked boundaries.
5. Meet and deal effectively with general public, always being firm but polite with the enforcement of rules and regulations.
6. Maintain the area's cleanliness and safety by picking up and removing debris, foreign objects and litter. Empty waste receptacles regularly, clean the washrooms daily and stock them with toilet tissue and paper towels.
7. Collect beach user fees, sell passes, make accurate change and complete in writing the daily report forms; be responsible for their accuracy.
8. Operate the concessions stand by always being courteous and polite to the public; promptly comply with customer requests, collect money and give accurate change; keep concession area clean and sale items stocked and attractively displayed; count all money, complete in writing the daily report forms and be accountable for all sale items, equipment and revenue.
9. Prepare the beach for opening each morning and its closure in the evenings, including proper storage and display of all equipment and sale items. This includes but is not limited to: 1) opening and closing of all gates; 2) cleaning restrooms; 3) removing all litter and foreign objects from the area; 4) installing and storing ladder on guard stand; 5) filling, lifting, and placing ice in chests and arranging other sale items in concession stand a return to proper storage; 6) erecting umbrella and returning to storage; 7) picking up in the morning and returning each evening certain items at the lake headquarters.
10. Be responsible for proper care and use of all beach equipment, supplies and facilities. Handle radios and megaphones with care, keep dry and free of sand and dirt. Handle and use the umbrella, radio and lifesaving equipment in such a manner as not to dent, bend, rip or tear.
11. Comprehend and follow all oral and written instructions.
12. Use tact and good judgment; utilize strong and effective interpersonal skills in interacting with supervisors, co-workers, consultants and the public; work effectively both independently and as a team member.
Other Duties: Perform other tasks as assigned for the overall operation of the beach.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
Work Environment: Work is performed outdoors usually in warm and hot weather, but occasionally in cold and rain; employees may be exposed to temperature extremes, wet conditions and ultraviolet rays from the sun.
Physical Demands: Work is essentially sedentary with occasional walking, standing and climbing a ladder. At times, the use of hands and feet are used to paddle a rescue board around swimming area. Lifesaving requires the physical agility to run, swim, pull and lift a person to safety. Work also involves perceiving and/or discriminating colors, sounds, depth, and texture.
Applicant must be in good physical condition. Whistle and appropriate swim wear are required of each lifeguard.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
Certified by the American Red Cross, the National Pool and Water Park Lifeguard Training Program, the YMCA or another lifeguard certifying organization with an equivalent lifeguard certification program. Applicant must be in good physical condition. Whistle and appropriate swim wear are required of each lifeguard.
Certification and re-certification cost will be reimbursed after the first forty (40) hours worked.
