General Summary
The Charlottesville Fire Department is seeking candidates to join our team as a Firefighter/Medic who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values of Leadership, Trust, Creativity, Respect, and Excellence.Firefighters perform responsible service work in fire suppression and prevention; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a company and/or shift commander. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under general supervision, with related functional areas and more advanced applications.
Requires certification either as: National Registry Paramedic or Commonwealth of Virginia Paramedic certified, or as Commonwealth of Virginia EMT-Intermediate.Firefighter training is provided at time of hire/orientation. Being certified as a firefighter is not a requirement for hire.
Lateral transfers available for full-time Firefighter/Paramedic employed in a career fire department for a minimum of 12 months. Individuals who qualify will only be required to participate in orientation.
During training, new recruits will be on a 40-hour per week schedule. After initial training, will be placed on a 56-hour schedule.Typical starting pay at $47,698.56 annually ($16.38 an hour based on a 56-hour schedule) and once released as a provider:
This is a full-time, non-exempt, position. Education, Experience and Skills
Minimum Requirements:
Preference given to military veterans (paramedics eligible for reciprocity within the Commonwealth)
Position requires completion of a physical agility exam (if not employed in a career fire department for a minimum of 12 months, or completed CPAT within the past 12 months) and successful completion of further pre-employment evaluations such as panel interviews, Chief interview, and background investigation.
The Virginia State Office of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) requires all State EMS Licensed Agencies employees to comply with Virginia State Administrative Code 12VAC5-31-910 (Criminal or Enforcement History). These regulations define "certain crimes which present an unreasonable risk to public health and safety." Any individual convicted of the crimes listed as barrier crimes within these regulations is not employable as a firefighter/EMT.
Skills:General knowledge of elementary physics, chemistry and mechanics; general knowledge of technical fire fighting principles and techniques; and principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression; general knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the City; general knowledge of emergency care methods, techniques and equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with fellow employees and the public; ability to keep simple records prepare reports; possession of mechanical aptitude; ability to perform heavy manual labor; skill in the operation of heavy emergency equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach and stretch with hands and arms with a full range of motion. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; jump; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and taste or smell.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 175 pounds. Wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus is required and each employee must be able to pass a fit for seal test.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, in high precarious places and confined spaces. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electric shock and vibration. The employee is often exposed to excessively high temperature intensities and sudden temperature changes.
The noise level in the working environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMT activates when noise levels may be loud. The employee may be required to work rotating shifts, and is considered essential emergency personnel. Any personnel in this position are required to work during emergency situations and are subject to be recalled to work at any time.
