Knowledge of:
The methods of installation, operation, control, safety, and testing of all types of existing elevator equipment.
Mechanics and the construction and operation of electric motors.
Laws and ordinances which govern the operation of elevators and similar equipment.
The City, State, and Model Elevator codes.
Ability to:
Read and interpret elevator plans, specifications, and applicable codes to recognize deviations from the code and accepted engineering principles.
Establish an effective working relationship with other employees, contractors, property owners, representatives of other agencies, and the general public.
Prepare reports and compose correspondence.

Examines elevator supporting structures to determine that they are safe and that all components of the installations such as cabs, platforms, doors, cables, rails, counterweights, and other miscellaneous controls and safety devices are of approved construction and design and in proper working condition.
Makes periodic and special tests of installations and associated equipment.
Investigates accidents or faulty operation, determines violations, orders repairs, and seals "out of service" when dangerous conditions are determined.
Issues orders and written notices to correct code violations, signs warrants, and may be subpoenaed to give evidence.
Confers with contractors, owners, and other interested parties to explain and interpret code requirements.
Prepares statistical and brief narrative reports, performs clerical work related to inspection activities, and arranges priorities of calls.
Working knowledge of current safety policies, instructions for proper usage, and other procedures and professional practices required for completing job duties.
Identifies unsafe practices and conditions and brings such matters to the attention of the supervisor.

Must be willing and able to climb, ride elevator tops near moving machinery, and descend into pits safely to perform inspections.
