Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Applies extensive welding techniques to fabricate, repair, and maintain a wide range of equipment and tools used in the manufacturing and maintenance work for the Solid Waste department; uses various metal working equipment, measuring tools, and design techniques to accomplish goals.
Uses and applies multiple styles of welding including arc, mig, tig, and oxy/acetelyn torch welding; operates cutters, torches, and other equipment common to welding.
Performs welding on ferrous and non-ferrous materials in various states of repair and condition.
Performs preventative maintenance and scheduled care on light, heavy, or specialized equipment; keeps accurate performance and maintenance records for identified equipment and tools.
Welds and repairs City owned dumpsters, roll-offs, and compactors; assists in the installation of trash compactors and prepares new containers for service.
Creates, fabricates, welds, and performs cutting and fitting work in the care and maintenance of dumpsters and other solid waste containers; determines appropriate welding equipment and methods, and identifies needed components and specifications; performs mig welding on steel and aluminum dumpsters.
Operates forklift and other equipment for moving dumpsters; applies all safety regulations and compliance standards.
Tests and inspects welded surfaces and structures to identify flaws or weaknesses; applies various forms of welding and knowledge to fabricate, refurbish, and repair.
Ensures compliance with safety regulations and standards; monitors work to ensure all protocols and policies are being followed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
A valid State driver's license is required.
Forklift Certificate.
This position is required to operate the below equipment, machines, tools, and other work aides:
Metal cutter, welding equipment, wide variety of metal shops tools, and other equipment as assigned.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma, High School Equivalency or G.E.D. Certificate AND two (2) years of experience as a Welder/Manufacturer; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
Knowledge of –
Art of welding steel, aluminum, and brass metals
Mathematics and computations
Fabricating, designing, refurbishing, and maintaining equipment
Various trades and industries; welding and fabricating
Safety and hazard precautions
Power tools, hydraulics, and heavy equipment
Department policies and protocols
Equipment maintenance practices and methods

Fabricating, welding, inspecting, and maintaining equipment, vehicles, and tools
Performing various forms of welding and fabrication
Reading blueprints and interpreting manuals
Performing heavy mechanical diagnostics and troubleshooting
Training and teaching others welding and fabricating techniques
Engaging and responding to customers and the public
Understanding and complying with oral and written instructions
Using tact and independent judgement within established guidelines
