Under the supervision of the Fire Chief, the primary responsibility of the Assistant Chief is to provide organization, planning, coordination and direction of operations and adhere to the highest standards for the protection of lives and property. 

**This position has been classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident for the following prohibited substances: marijuana, amphetamines, opioids, phencyclidine (PCP), and cocaine, as well as any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.**

  • Respond to incidents and emergencies as needed or requested, and provide assistance and direction to subordinates retaining command. 
  • Review operations to assure the accomplishment of the Department’s mission statement. 
  • Assist in the coordination of mutual fire protection plans, emergency responses, and other department activities with surrounding jurisdictions and organizations.
  • Develop, implement, and revise goals, objectives, policies, procedures, guidelines and priorities of operations. 
  • Develop and implement major programs and projects. 
  • Supervise the performance of projects and receive unexpected priority assignments. 
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations and work cooperatively and jointly with all levels of the organization to provide quality customer service.
  • Attend meetings, conferences, workshops, training sessions, and review publications to become and remain current on the principles and practices of operations. 
  • Maintains regulatory compliance by keeping current on industry trends, regulations, and issues. 
  • Identifies areas of concern for management for review and potential action. 
  • Keeps immediate supervisor fully and accurately informed on all issues. 
  • Will serve as Fire Chief in the absence of the Fire Chief. Perform other activities and program oversight, as assigned by the Fire Chief
  • Manages and provides leadership and guidance to staff through proper delegation and work supervision. 
  • Monitors work, evaluates performance, trains, counsels, coaches, and instructs employees in order to meet established goals and objectives. 
  • Ensures adherence to established policies and procedures to remain in compliance with local, state, and federal rules, regulations and policies. 
  • Recommends and implements corrective actions when necessary. 
  • Conducts performance evaluations; 
  • Collects and analyzes data to prepare and present various special and recurring reports. 
  • Provide accurate and timely information related to assigned functions and duties. 
  • Reviews and approves reports, and prepares and maintains required departmental records and reports. 
  • Represents the Department in commission meetings, civic and professional event.
  • Responds to and resolves various complaints, issues, inquiries, and problems as authorized and in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Manages and monitors department administrative activities, budget development, special funding and strategic planning. 
  • Participates in procurement activities for supplies, services, equipment, and other items;
  • Coordinates and manages various special and recurring projects, 
  • Represents the City and Fire Department on Regional, State and local committees, meetings and conferences. 
  • Makes public appearances and speaks on fire safety and fire awareness.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Fire Science, Public Administration or related field with post-graduate course work in the Executive Fire Officer Program at the National Fire Academy preferred 
  • Minimum of 6 years’ experience in Fire Service Management or any equivalent combination of experience, education and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and ability necessary to perform the work.

Licenses and Certificates

  • Current IFSAC Fire Officer, NREMT-BASIC, 
  • Paramedic preferred; 
  • Valid Class D Driver’s License; 
  • CPR

Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed in an office, and in internal and external environments with exposure to inclement weather, and varying temperatures. 
  • Moderate physical demands; mostly desk work; may be exposed to hazardous materials, dangerous machinery, and potential physical harm when responding to fire and rescue emergencies. 
  • Must be able to lift & carry up to 75 pounds.

Working Conditions

  • Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, regular work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues.  
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services.   
  • Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City policies.
