For any position within the Division of Police, the hiring process will also include the completion of an extensive personal history questionnaire and a polygraph examination. Under general supervision, is responsible for receiving, compiling, and analyzing information and for using the information in the preparation of intelligence reports used in major case development and investigations; performs related duties as required.
Examples of Work
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
* Reviews written and oral intelligence information to recognize patterns that may indicate the presence of organized criminal activity;
* Compiles and organizes criminal intelligence information regarding threat groups and suspects; develops threat assessments and provides real-time criminal intelligence information to law enforcement personnel engaged in on-going criminal investigations; identifies potential threats to officer safety;
* Compiles and prepares detailed investigative reports and maintains related records in accordance with federal regulations;
* Analyzes data including published documents such as public reports indicating land purchases, regional newspapers, and the literature of local and regional organizations to determine if criminal activity is probably occurring;
* Researches, collects, analyzes, and interprets data and information from a variety of digital and electronic sources, including data from cell phones, computers, tablets, surveillance and communications devices, social media websites, vehicle infotainment systems, home gaming systems, partially damaged or intact disks, and memory cards;
* Utilizes covert social media accounts for awareness of violence, development of threats, criminal activity, and gang related activities;
* Develops detailed flow-charts, block diagrams, matrices, and graphs to help formulate, illustrate, and evaluate inferences, hypotheses, and recommendations;
* Categorizes data into fact, rumor, opinion, or inference; directs the filing of data once it has been categorized; inputs and analyzes accounting and statistical data;
* Reviews files and new information to ensure continuity of information and develop cross-references; purges files according to guidelines;
* Prepares tactical and strategic intelligence reports and conducts oral presentations of hypotheses on the presence of criminal activity;
* Requests acquisition of needed data to complete a particular file, case, or subject;
* Analyzes procedures and policies; makes recommendations for improving the effectiveness of intelligence activities;
* Performs financial analysis for possible use in criminal prosecution;
* Attends meetings with appropriate bureau, Division, and other law enforcement agency personnel as needed;
* May assist in the drafting of legal process documentation such as search warrants, court orders, and subpoenas; makes electronic requests for data;
* May testify as an expert witness in court to explain the results of an analysis.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a bachelor's degree and two (2) years of experience analyzing data and investigating criminal activity. Substitution(s): A master's degree in criminology, law enforcement, or a closely related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.
Positions allocated to this classification may require State of Ohio or federal clearances, certification, or licensure due to the nature of, or the funding requirements for, the program or assignment.
