Operate a wide range (light, medium or occasionally heavy) of equipment to construct, repair and maintain city streets, utilities, parks, buildings, grounds and other infrastructure.  Performs routine manual and semi-skilled labor for city construction and maintenance of city infrastructure. 

Position placement dependent on qualifications (Maintenance I $26.52 - $35.80 per hour; Maintenance II  $28.52 - $38.50 per hour; Maintenance III $30.67 - $41.40 per hour).


  • Works as member of maintenance team in a safe and efficient operation.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and service work on equipment.
  • Perform pre-trip vehicle inspection as per CDL requirements.
  • Contacts vendors or purchase needed supplies or equipment as requested by supervisor.
  • Performs work within OSHA regulations, city safety procedures and Employee Right-to-Know law regulations.
  • Keeps accurate records as needed.
  • May be assigned to Maintenance III duties.
  • Performs Gopher State One Call locates as necessary.
  • Uses common hand tools such as chain saws, handsaws, etc. with reasonable degree of skill.
  • Operates a variety of city equipment with proficiency.     
  • Performs duties on weekends, holidays and evenings as assigned.
  • Available to work on call as emergency or need arises.
  • Works in cooperation with and assists other departments as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.  
  • Operates and maintains sanitary / storm lift stations, water pump station including related computer equipment.
  • Performs all labor relative to construction, operation and maintenance of water distribution, sanitary sewer collection, and storm water management infrastructure. 
  • Operates and maintains various equipment such as pumps, backhoe, excavator, skid steers, sewer jet, dump trucks, hydro excavation unit), steamer pump, cement mixer, or others as assigned.
  • Keeps pertinent records, such as time, material and equipment used on specific jobs.
  • Maintains on-call status on weeknights and weekends on a rotating standby basis with other department employees.   A maximum response time of no more than 30 minute is required for
     call-outs when on standby.  
  • Will be assigned to work evenings and/or weekends.
  • Assists with water meter repair and record keeping.
  • Available to work on call as emergency or needs arise.  
  • Performs inspections on utility construction projects. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and to physically perform functions as related to position.
  • Must obtain Valid MN Commercial Vehicle Driver’s License and air brake and tanker endorsement within 6 months of hire or may be separated from position.  
  • Physical examination required as it relates to duties
  • Ability to physically perform maintenance functions as related to position.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a maintenance team as well as independently
 
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
  • Valid MN Commercial Vehicle Driver’s License and air brake and tanker endorsement 
  • Registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse
  • Completion of a technical school program in related field. 
  • Experience in utility systems maintenance and operations.
  • Currently have a Class D (or better) water license. 
  • Currently have a Class SD (or better) waste water collection license.
  • Currently have a Minnesota Department of Health Certified Pool Operator license/certification.
  • Experience in dump truck operation.
  • Experience in light equipment operation.
  • Experience in building trades (carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing).
  • Completion of Federal Emergency Management Agency’s National Incident Management System courses.
  • Currently have any of the following licenses/certifications:
    • Minnesota non-commercial herbicide/pesticide applicator’s license  
    • International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist 
    • National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Certified Playground Safety Inspector 
    • Minnesota Department of Public Safety Commercial Truck Inspector 
    • U of MN Erosion and Storm water Management Construction Site Management Certification
       
Communications:  Must be able to understand and carry out directives.   Must be able to read, speak and write in English.  Must be able to deal respectfully and courteously with the public and staff.   Responsible for timely communication with supervisor and co-workers on job status, equipment problems/needs, safety issues, and supplies.

Interpersonal Relationships:  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors and public.  Must exclude personal biases from work performance. Technical Knowledge and Ability:  Must have the ability to comprehend a variety of instructions and manuals, math calculation and problem solving. Ability to understand equipment operations and troubleshoot equipment.   
 
For Utility Maintenance
Must have a working knowledge of sewer, storm sewer and water main construction.   Must be able to read simple water main and sewer plans. Must have above average mechanical aptitude.
