DEFINITION

To perform a variety of semi skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, signs, sewers, storm drains, and related public works facilities; and to operate light and moderately heavy power driven equipment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Public Works Maintenance Worker I This is the entry level class in the Public Works Maintenance Worker class series. Positions in this class normally perform most of the duties required of the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and normally exercise less discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits a pattern which has been established and explained before work is started. Generally, changes in work procedures are explained in advance as they arise. Under the flexible staffing concept, positions assigned to the Public Works Maintenance Worker I level may reasonably expect to progress to the Public Works Maintenance Worker II level with training, experience, and satisfactory job performance.

Public Works Maintenance Worker II This is the journey level in the class series. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the Public Works Maintenance Worker I class, or when filled from the outside, require prior experience in the construction and maintenance of streets, sewers, and public works related facilities. Appointment to the higher class requires that the employee be performing substantially the full range of duties for the class and meet the qualification standards for the class, including the proven ability to assume full stand-by program responsibility. All positions assigned to this class require the ability to work independently exercising judgment and initiative. Duties will normally require the ability to operate the full range of mechanical equipment related to a specific assignment.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Public Works Maintenance Worker I

Receives immediate supervision from a Public Works Crew Supervisor.

Public Works Maintenance Worker II

Receives general supervision from a Public Works Crew Supervisor.

May exercise technical supervision over less experienced personnel.EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Install and repair underground pipes; remove blockages from sewer and storm drain lines.

Exercise valves; replace mainline valves.

Test and install pipes; assist in maintaining and testing water main valves; clean and lube machinery and facilities of the Water Pollution Control Plant.

Set up traffic safety devices and barricades as necessary.

Perform sewer maintenance duties; operate maintenance equipment and tools such as power tools, sewer rodder, hydraulic jet cleaner, front loader, and related equipment and tools.

Perform routine preventive maintenance on equipment as assigned.

Maintain wells; check valves, meters, and oil level.

Maintain and repair fire hydrants; flush hydrants.

Perform street maintenance duties; operate construction and maintenance equipment such as trucks, tractors, and backhoes for a variety of construction and maintenance operations involving streets, sidewalks and gutters, sewer lines, and drainage channels.

Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.

Read and interpret maps of underground sewer and drainage systems.

Maintain storm drains and ditches; remove brush, trees, and weeds.

Assist in maintaining lift stations; read meters, change filters, test run pumps.

Paint traffic markings on streets, crosswalks, parking lots, and curbs.

Manufacture and install traffic signs and remove signs no longer required.

Design and manufacture special signs for municipal facilities.

Maintain inventory of traffic safety related supplies.

Spread asphalt in patching and repairing streets.

Perform emergency street, sewer, storm drain or other public works maintenance work as required.

May respond to hazardous material incidents.

Participate in the city's stand-by program as required.

Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other city employees and the public using principles of good customer service.

Perform related duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Public Works Maintenance Worker I

Knowledge of:

Basic methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in maintenance work.

Basic construction and repair methods.

Principles and practices of work safety.

Ability to:

On a continuous basis, know and understand operations, and observe safety rules. Intermittently analyze problem equipment; identify and locate equipment; interpret work orders; remember equipment location; explain jobs to others.

Intermittently sit while studying or preparing reports; bend, squat, climb, kneel or twist when performing installation of equipment; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; lift or carry weight of 100 pounds or less.

Perform semi skilled maintenance work.

Learn to operate a variety of light and heavy mechanical equipment.

Perform heavy manual labor.

Understand and follow written and oral instructions.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Experience and Training

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

Some general maintenance experience.

Training:

Formal or informal education or training to ensure the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful performance.

License or Certificate

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate California driver's license.

May need to possess a valid California Class A or B driver's license as required by the position. Per DOT regulation, positions that require Class A or B driver's license will be required to have a pre-employment drug test and will be subject to random and other alcohol and drug testing.

Possession of, or ability to obtain any other certificate required by other agencies in the area of assignment.

Public Works Maintenance Worker II

In addition to the qualifications required for Public Works Maintenance Worker I:

Knowledge of:

Methods, techniques, tools and the operational characteristics of mechanical equipment used in the construction and maintenance of streets, sewers, signs, storm drains, and related facilities.

Procedures and techniques of concrete and asphalt work.

Hazards associated with the work and proper safety precautions.

Traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in truck and heavy equipment operations.

Purposes and uses of a variety of vehicles, equipment, power tools and hand tools including motorized and hydraulic equipment.

Standards relating to installation, location and required maintenance of traffic signs and pavement markings.

Properties of backfill materials, construction materials, concrete, asphalt, hot patch, cold patch, oils, paints, and a variety of other materials used in maintenance work.

Ability to:

Perform skilled maintenance, construction and repair work in the area of work assigned.

Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner.

Work effectively in the absence of close supervision.

Use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner.

Read and interpret basic maps and blueprints.

Assist in the training and supervision of others in the safe operation of equipment.

Perform asphalt, concrete, and pipe work; work with paints and prepare surfaces for painting.

Work safely and adhere to principles of safety when working near traffic or in other environments.

Experience and Training:

Two years experience performing duties similar to a Maintenance Worker I with the City of Davis.

Training:

Formal or informal education or training to ensure the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful performance.License or Certificate
