Summary

Responsible for developing and facilitating interactive educational and instructional programs that are organized, age appropriate and maintain interest to promote the City of Denton’s waste minimization goals and resource conservation programs.

DUTIES


  • Develop informal and formal educational programming that is in line with the goals and objectives of the City of Denton’s Strategic Plan, including but not limited to solid waste and recycling and related environmental programs.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with Homeowner Association (HOA’s), Multifamily, and Commercial customers to determine educational needs; create educational programs that meet identified goals and objectives.
  • Coordinate adoption of comprehensive sustainability educational programming and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to enhance and promote the program.
  • Evaluate, update, and provide on-site tours of the Materials Recovery Facility and City of Denton Landfill, as needed.
  • Design and conduct instructional and training programs for internal and external customers.
  • Design and maintain inventory of educational, and promotional materials that are within budget; assist with the creation of operational materials for division, as needed.
  • Research, create and provide continuing education opportunities on the topics including but not limited to solid waste, recycling, and sustainability.
  • Oversee the Solid Waste and Recycling social media presence on all platforms acquired and approved by the City of Denton and Department.
  • Maintain Solid Waste & Recycling website pages, including the Solid Waste & Recycling section of the Denton Green Business Program, to ensure information is up to date, captures the audience interest and is accurate.
  • Provide educational opportunities for the community through involvement in events, including but not limited to, community fairs, festivals, and meetings.
  • Seek to educate citizens through any available media; collaborate with civic and non-profit groups to promote Solid Waste & Recycling programs.
  • Continue to collect and analyze data to measure success of educational programming and marketing strategies; present data analysis to professional organizations through conferences and publishing, as appropriate.
  • Research and evaluate successful educational programs throughout the country and stay up to date on the latest technology and information related to solid waste and recycling education; provide recommendations and implement program improvements for the City of Denton program.
  • Write grant applications for new and existing educational program funding.

Job Requirements

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Biology, Earth, Environmental Science, Social Sciences, Education, Marketing, Communication, or related field; and,
  • Two (2) years’ experience with least one year with:
    • Teaching a classroom setting, planning Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)-compliant lessons,
    • Proven educational presentation creation and marketing materials for all age groups,
    • Direct environmental work, research and/or experience in Solid Waste Recycling Education, Outreach, or Operations, or related field,
OR
  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.

  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State and Local laws and regulations.

  • Skill at the intermediate level, working with Microsoft Office 365, and other software systems to complete work.
  • Skill in presenting technical information to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to lead, develop, direct, and deliver professional learning.
  • Ability to provide exceptional service to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to analyze, research, interpret and understand policies, laws, and regulations that are able to be presented and understood.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must have and maintain a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law)
  • Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check and social security number verification.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements

SAFETY

  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment; ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing; operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Promptly report unsafe conditions in the work area and/or any conditions that are not immediately correctable to the supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Safety Sensitive (Subject to random drug testing): Yes.
  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals.
  • Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.
  • Lifting: Lifting no more than 20 pounds and carrying up to 10 pounds.
  • Environment: Works in an office setting; occasionally requires irregular and/or prolonged hours.
  • Travel: Travels to City of Denton buildings and professional meetings as required.
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position. Must be able to work outside normal business hours, as needed. Must be able to work overtime, as needed.
  • Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.
