This is a part-time position as a working supervisor responsible for assigned aquatic and non-aquatic programs and facilities.

Major Duties



  • Trains, supervises, and directs the work of lifeguards, ride attendants, pool attendants, concessionaires, cashiers, ice rink employees, and other assigned staff.

  • Monitors the public use of aquatic and non-aquatic facilities; enforces department and safety rules and regulations.

  • Assists with the planning and organizing of the seasonal holiday ice rink to include recruitment, interviewing, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating personnel.

  • Responds to emergencies by providing First Aid, CPR, and other appropriate techniques.

  • Troubleshoots and repairs problems with aquatic and non-aquatic computerized and mechanical equipment.

  • Monitors water chemistry and adjusts as needed; ensures the proper functionality of all equipment.

  • Completes paperwork and documentation associated with water chemistry, facility maintenance, and accident/incident reports.

  • Cleans and maintains facilities; oversees staff to ensure daily maintenance schedule is completed.

  • Resolves problems and answers questions from the public.

  • Provides and oversees swimming lessons as needed; teaches water safety, general and advanced stroke mechanics, and other classes as appropriate.

  • Supervises the ice rink for the approximate six-week operation season to include serving as a first responder, customer service, cash management, crowd control, and special events.

  • Assists with lifeguard training as needed.

  • Assists with swim meets and other events and programs.

  • Handles money, including cash and checks; completes bank deposits and internal paperwork.

  • Provides customer service; works with rental customers for birthdays, cabanas, etc. as assigned.

  • Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • Knowledge of facility operations and policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of safety precautions needed for ice-skating program.

  • Knowledge of pool equipment and water chemistry.

  • Knowledge of American Red Cross standards.

  • Knowledge of city accounting policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of pool safety principles.

  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs to include Digiquatics.

  • Skill in training and supervising personnel and providing corrective feedback.

  • Skill in planning.

  • Skill in problem solving.

  • Skill in interpersonal relations.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

  • Ability to make change, process credit cards, and count money.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with the public.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Assistant Director (Aquatics) and/or Aquatics Manager assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and establishes procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include ADA regulations, the Model Aquatic Health Code, Health Department regulations, OSHA regulations, American Red Cross guidelines, and city and department policies and procedures. These are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
  • The work consists of related supervisory and administrative duties. Frequent interruptions contribute to the complexity of the work.

  • The purpose of this position is to supervise city aquatic and non-aquatic facilities and programs. Successful performance in this position contributes to the provision of safe aquatic and non-aquatic facilities and programs to the public.
CONTACTS
  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, other city personnel, bankers, and the public.

  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and motivate persons.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects up to 50 lbs., uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

  • The work is typically performed in aquatic and non-aquatic facilities to include the Ice & Lights Ice Rink, specifically outdoors, occasionally in hot, cold, or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to machinery with moving parts and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, respirators, face shields, boots, goggles, gloves, etc. In addition, those assigned to work on the ice rink as a skate guard will be exposed to slippery surfaces.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position has direct supervision over assigned personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or GED equivalent, as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA); and

  • Two (2) years recent work experience lifeguarding or in pool management preferred.

  • Possession of current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certificate preferred.

  • Possession of current American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certificate preferred.

  • Possession of current Lifeguard Instructor certificate preferred.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Employees in this position are required to obtain/maintain American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certificate within six (6) months of employment/promotion/demotion/transfer. (See condition for details.)

  • An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including a criminal, credit, past employment, and reference checks.

  • An applicant for this position is subject to a criminal history background check pursuant to the following statutes: §§38-13-1. Ala. Code (1975) et seq., as amended by the Child Care Safety Act (Act of Alabama #2018-278), Act of Alabama 2019-322, or §41-27-10, Ala. Code (1975).

  • Employees are required to submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy, which includes pre-employment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position. (PBA 8/13/12)

  • Must meet the City of Dothan’s employment physical standard, which includes drug/alcohol testing.
