The Planning Director is seeking a responsible individual to manage and perform routine and complex technical and professional work in the Planning Division. This includes current and/or long range planning and transportation projects and programs related to the development and implementation of land use, environmental and transportation plans and policies. Assists the Director of Planning and Community Development in providing technical and staff assistance to the Planning Board and other land use Boards, City Council and the public.


This is a full-time, 40 hour a week position. $$1,507.20 to $2,182.80 per week. Position is open until filled.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Except as specifically noted, the following functions are considered essential to this position. The listed examples may not include all duties found in this class):

  • Support Planning Board and Technical Review Committee regularly and others as needed and assigned.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of growth management, land use, economic development, utility, housing, transportation, facilities, solid waste or other plans and codes to meet the City's needs and any inter-governmental agreements or requirements.
  • Evaluate land use proposals for conformity to state or federal laws, and established plans and ordinances; evaluates proposals' development impact as they relate to the adopted plans of the City and make recommendations.
  • Assist the Director of Planning and Community Development with the review and coordination of subdivision, site plan, conditional use permits, and various applications.
  • Gather and assess technical data to maintain the City's planning and land use regulations. Prepare a variety of studies, reports and related information for decision-making purposes.
  • Monitor other governmental plans and actions affecting transportation operations; serve as a member of regional or inter-governmental planning groups or advisory committees.
  • Evaluate environmental and transportation information and recommends mitigation measures to reduce adverse impacts of development.
  • Assist in designs for parks, streetscapes, landscapes and other municipal projects as assigned. Manages special projects as assigned.
  • Prepare and write applications for infrastructure, community development, transportation, and recreation grants.
  • Maintains a data base of information for planning purposes, as assigned.
  • Respond to local citizens inquiring about city planning and zoning regulations and ordinances and provides technical assistance and information to developers and land owners.
  • Assist in the everyday administration of the office and supports the Planning team.
  • Maintains all necessary records for day-to-day activities and permanent file.
  • As necessary, attends Planning Board and City Council, and other board/committee meetings as necessary
  • Participates in reviewing, updating, and implementing the City's master plan and strategic plan.
  • Make recommendations jointly with Director of Planning and Community Development to amend Ordinances.
  • Performs field inspections on projects and programs associated with planning and community development, as needed.
  • Compiles statistics, maintains records and prepares reports related to financial, personnel and/or operational data.
  • Makes presentations to the Boards and public.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with employees, other departments and agencies, and the general public.
  • Maintains familiarity with and executes safe work procedures associated with assigned work.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
