** Work is full­time during the summer and part time during school. Normal hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with some flexible scheduling available.  Overtime work hours may extend to 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Part-time work hours are approximately 10 hours per week during fall and spring semesters, full­time during winter break. Returning for subsequent summers may be an option.

GENERAL SUMMARY: The project management intern will assist in the coordination of capital improvement projects under the direct supervision of the Project Manager; work involves all aspects of project management which includes scope, schedule, cost, risk assessment and quality; collaborate on civil infrastructure projects including buildings, parking structures, brownfields redevelopment, storm water, sanitary and renewable energy; and perform other duties as assigned. Project assignments vary in size and scope and include working on projects that are in either the planning, design, or construction phase. Aspects of work include project design, construction administration, construction observation and record keeping; and requires regular communication between various design consultants, construction contractors, state and federal agencies, and utility stakeholders. Work is reviewed by a supervisor through conferences and results achieved.

  • Prepare requests for proposals, construction bid documents and contracts.
  • Coordinate the consultant selection process, work with design consultants and contractors.
  • Review construction bid documents and contracts.
  • Assist in project implementation; solving projects management issues; design and construction coordination; and with non-infrastructure project-related assignments.
  • Create project specifications and technical reports.
  • Use GIS for engineering investigations.
  • Utilize electronic filing for project documentation.
  • Inspect construction sites to determine if they meet specifications or standards.
  • Recommend technical design or process changes to improve quality of capital projects.
  • Incorporate sustainable and resilient features into the designs.
  • Develop technical methods or processes.
  • Investigate the environmental impacts of projects.
  • Coordinate regulatory compliance activities.
  • Evaluate technical data to determine effect on designs or plans.
  
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 
  • Engineering and Design - Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
  • Construction - Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of  buildings, or other structures such as highways and roads.
  • Design - Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Complex Problem Solving - Figuring out the best way to solve a problem.
  • Systems Analysis - Figuring out how a system should work and how changes in the future will affect it.
  • Systems Evaluation - Measuring how well a system is working and how to improve it.
  • Active Learning - Figuring out how to use new ideas or things.
  • Teamwork - Positive, uplifting attitude that helps to cultivate a strong collaborative environment and the ability to place the success of the whole above the needs of oneself.
  • Communication - Ability to effectively communicate information to support organizational objectives, both verbally and in writing, and interact with all levels of city staff and outside stakeholders in a positive and cooperative manner.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • College student enrolled in Civil Engineering or related field.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Sophomore or higher-level college student enrolled in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • Experience working in the civil engineering or construction industry.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:  
  • Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license and automobile insurance coverage consistent with the City’s requirements.
