What are the responsibilities and job description for the Construction Inspector position at City of Durango?
The City of Durango’s Capital Improvements Construction Management (CICM) Division is seeking a Construction Inspector to join our team.
As a Construction Inspector, you will be responsible for performing detailed field inspections, supervising and approving construction and installations, and reviewing construction plans and specifications for constructability. You will collaborate closely with CICM staff, contractors, architects, and engineers to ensure that capital improvement projects are executed efficiently and meet the highest quality standards. Working under the general guidance of the CICM Division Manager and in collaboration with CICM Project Managers and other CICM Inspectors, you will contribute directly to the safety, functionality, and longevity of Durango’s infrastructure.

We’ll support you with up to two attempts at certification exams, so you have the resources needed to succeed in this role.What You’ll Do in This Role:
- Perform in-office reviews of construction plans and specifications to ensure compliance with local and state standards and to prepare for field inspections.
- Conduct regular field inspections to verify that construction work follows local and state regulations and is in compliance with approved plans, specifications, and codes.
- Inspect waterline disinfection and testing processes to ensure they meet American Water Works Association (AWWA) standards.
- Monitor temporary traffic controls in work zones to confirm they follow approved traffic control plans and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- Review Stormwater Management Plans (SWMP) to comply with Colorado MS4 Permit regulations.
- Verify that permanent materials are installed according to approved submittals.
- Verify testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and other materials is conducted as required.
- Keep detailed records of all inspections for future reference.
- Assist with surveying data collection.
- Communicate with project team members, contractors, and the public.
- High school diploma or GED, plus college-level coursework in engineering, drafting, or a related area.
- Three years of increasingly responsible experience in public works, construction, or technical engineering.
- Skill in reading and understanding construction plans and specifications, with a knowledge of materials, methods, and techniques of modern Public Works construction, including civil, general building, and utility construction.
- Understanding of pertinent state and local laws, codes, and regulations relating to municipal construction, along with stormwater management practices and MS4 permits.
- Strong skill in performing site inspections of all types of construction, including structures, roadways, water mains, sanitary sewer mains, and storm drains.
