Department/Division: Central Services / Facility Management Division
Location: 210 Cheshire Ave. Eugene, OR 97402
Work Schedule: 10:00 p.m. - 6:30 a.m.; days TBD, possible weekends
This full-time LD position is projected to last 12 months with the option to extend per business need. Please see "Supplemental Information" at the end of the posting for more information about limited duration positions. PLEASE NOTE: If a current City of Eugene LD employee is selected for the position, they will not have rights back to their current LD
- Performs janitorial duties such as dusting, sweeping, mopping and stripping, waxing, and buffing floors, cleaning carpets, washing windows, cleaning and sanitizing kitchen, lunchroom and lavatory facilities, and emptying trash; typically works in work groups and shares responsibility for providing clean and safe facilities for city staff, the general public and visitors.
- Performs limited building maintenance, repair, and graffiti removal tasks. Reports needed building maintenance repair and reports hazardous conditions or safety problems.
- Operates a variety of custodial equipment, hand and power tools, and vehicles to perform cleaning and maintenance duties; services and repairs small equipment to keep it in good working condition; trains on specialized equipment for proper and safe use.
- Maintains daily, weekly and monthly records of custodial activities, including purchasing and inventory records; assists with purchasing and re-stocking cleaning and janitorial supplies.
- Cleans vehicles and equipment; includes vacuuming and cleaning interiors and washing exterior.
- Responds to inquiries and requests from City staff and the general public utilizing friendly and effective communication and customer service skills, determining the needs of the customer and providing appropriate assistance and information; and represents the City in a positive manner.
- May perform basic maintenance of grounds and landscaped areas surrounding buildings; may clean decorative pools; pressure wash sidewalks and parking areas; vacuum debris; mow, weed, trim and water landscaping.
- Picks up and delivers supplies and equipment; arranges tables, chairs, video and audio equipment for meetings; may lock and secure offices and activate/deactivate security alarms.
- Provides orientation to new employees, including demonstrating the proper and safe use of custodian equipment and processes.
- Actively supports and respects diversity in the workplace and helps create a supportive workplace for all employees.
- Maintains ability to work assigned locations and work schedules.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as required by management to meet the needs of the department.
- Use of common cleaning equipment, tools, materials, supplies and chemicals needed to perform janitorial, minor building maintenance, and minor vehicle servicing work.
- Routine janitorial practices and methods, including safety procedures, proper handling, operation and maintenance of equipment, and basic building safety tasks.
- Identify occupational hazards and use of proper safety precautions and processes.
- Principles and practices of strong customer service.
- Knowledge of spoken and written English sufficient to understand product labels and instructions.
- Performing minor repairs and maintenance of building fixtures using hand and power tools.
- Performing assigned custodial tasks independently by following oral and written instructions regarding established routines and guidelines; and assist co-workers as needed.
- Prioritizing tasks and performing a full range of assigned janitorial duties by working independently.
- Properly researching safety data sheets online to determine appropriate safety precautions.
- Working effectively with coworkers and work cooperatively with staff during public events to meet operational requirements; and may provide assistance to other custodial workers.
- Properly using specialized custodial equipment and successfully completing specialized trainings.
- Providing courteous customer service and working harmoniously with the general public, supervisors, co-workers, and employees, representing various diverse backgrounds.
- Effectively communicating both orally and in writing to convey information and to receive work assignments.
- If required, ability to travel between worksites and work assigned shifts as needed.
- Maintaining written records of work schedules, duties and supply inventories.
- Performing the physical duties required of the position as outlined in the working conditions.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as listed above may be substituted. (Equivalent combination of education and experience must equal the total years of experience and education listed below).
Experience and Training:
Six months work experience demonstrating courteous customer service, significant public interaction, and working effectively with co-workers and in work teams.
Cleaning or minor maintenance and upkeep of work area is desirable.
License and Certificates:
Specific positions may require the possession of, or ability to obtain, and maintain a valid Oregon State driver’s license.
Required to pass a Eugene Police Department background check and maintain the ability to work at all City of Eugene Facilities.Work in this class is done generally in an office environment. Some assignments may include working outdoors. Requires constant standing and walking with frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, and twisting. Constant use of hands and arms and may require overhead reaching. Frequently required to lift up to 35 pounds, occasional lifting up to 36-60 lbs. Work includes operating a variety of tools and equipment that may require additional and advanced training. Exposure to moving equipment, dust fumes, electric shock, toxic/caustic chemicals and biological hazards. Duties may be performed in a closed facility and/or around the public and during public events. Required to work around and respond to difficult and confrontational situations and individuals. May require working at heights. Safety equipment, including shoes, gloves and eye protection are required.
Limited Duration employees are those hired for the limited time period specified in this posting. After the position is posted and a competitive selection process has been completed, an offer of employment will be made. Employees hired into limited duration positions will be members of the AFSCME bargaining unit and covered by the contract except for the items outlined below under Salary and Benefits.

Salary and Benefits: Limited duration employees have many of the same benefits as AFSCME employees, although there are a few exceptions due to the limited length of employment. The salary schedule for limited duration employees is the same schedule used for regular AFSCME employees. The normal starting salary is the first step shown on the posting. Other placement in the salary range may be considered depending on qualifications and experience. Limited Duration employees are at-will employees and they do not have a probationary period; they accrue no seniority, have no bumping or layoff provisions, and have no discipline or discharge rights. Additionally, limited duration employees will receive City health plan coverage for themselves only. Dependent coverage is available at full cost to the limited duration employee.
