SUMMARY: Under general supervision, the Sign Technician is responsible for the design, fabrication, and maintenance of all street signs in Evans in accordance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, and standards established in the Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). The Sign Technician is also responsible for the design, fabrication, and maintenance of various other signage projects at public facilities throughout the community, including parks and trails.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. - Demonstrate the ability to design and fabricate a wide variety of street signs to maintain compliance with United States Department of Transportation and Colorado Department of Transportation regulations, and standards established in the MUTCD.
- Demonstrate the ability to use modern sign fabrication technology, such as computers, software, and printers, as well as computer programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, and ArcGIS.
- Demonstrate the ability to routinely test and document the retro-reflectivity of street signs using a retro-reflectometer.
- Coordinate with the Public Works Department – Operations Division to install and maintain street signs in a manner that supports DOT requirements, MUTCD standards, and goals for community beautification.
- Coordinate with the Parks & Recreation Department – Parks Maintenance Division to design, fabricate, install, and maintain signs for the public park system in a manner that supports goals for community beautification.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent; Minimum of three years of experience with street sign design and fabrication desired. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the standards established in the Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- Knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations as it relates to safe vehicle and equipment operations.
- Knowledge of best practices for the safe operation of power tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of safe workplace rules and procedures.
- Skill in sign design, fabrication, installation, and maintenance.
- Skill in reading and interpreting plans, maps, and instructions.
- Skill in operating/using all assigned machinery, tools, equipment, and/or supplies in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Skill in the safe and lawful operation of a motor vehicle.
- Ability to work with limited supervision and follow instructions given verbally and/or in writing.
- Ability to consistently follow safety instructions.
- Ability to develop and maintain accurate records.
- Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints and maps.
- Ability to communicate effectively with various audiences.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, other agencies, contractors, and the public.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
- Valid Colorado driver’s license throughout duration of employment.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
Position requires hearing, talking, seeing, sitting, standing, walking on level, uneven terrain, and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, balancing, crouching, crawling, grasping, pinching, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 100 pounds on an occasional basis, 25 to 50 pounds on a frequent basis, and up to 20 pounds on a constant basis is also required. The incumbent may use materials and chemicals that may expose the employee to fumes, dust, and air contaminants as well as work in confined spaces. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions and often work with constant interruptions. The employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, vibration, and street/road traffic. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.
Work Environment:
Work performed may be located at Operations Shop, City parks, city streets and Right-of-Ways and other public facilities, and other related areas. The employee may be required to work outdoors in all weather conditions. The employee may be exposed to extreme heat and cold, noise, fumes, gases, solvents, airborne particles, chemicals, and street and road traffic. Work is often performed in, on, or around dangerous equipment where the safety of the employee and public must be a priority.
The City of Evans conducts pre-employment physical exams, drug testing, and background investigations as a condition of employment. A positive drug screen test for marijuana will disqualify a candidate from being considered for employment, regardless of whether the use is recreational or medical (red card).
