What are the responsibilities and job description for the Transit Intern position at City of Fargo?

Under general supervision provided by the Transit Planner, the Transit Intern is responsible for assisting in the planning and implementation of department projects and programs by collecting data, completing research, and providing project administration. The Transit Intern will perform analytical work, through the identification, collection and interpretation of data used to prepare plans, reports, maps, tables, procurement, marketing and public information plans (including social media), and public outreach regarding Transit.

Scope of Responsibility:
The Transit Intern may be assigned to specific areas such as administration, research, transit planning, marketing, operations, or public information.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Administration
    1. Prepares staff reports from data and information used from projects, studies, and proposals.
    2. Prepares or updates new and existing polices for transit and contractor staff.
    3. Prepares maps, photos, tables, and charts reflecting conditions and trends or transit reports and presentations.
    4. Procures items using City of Fargo or Federal procurement policy.

  2. Research / Transit Planning
    1. Works with vendors to provide information on transit operations for studies.
    2. Reviews plans and reports from studies conducted on transit operations by outside vendors.
    3. Reviews potential changes to transit operations, which include route timings, route paths, bus stop reviews, and more.

  3. Marketing
    1. Create, review and/or install marketing materials for upcoming campaigns.
    2. Recommend new or changes to current marketing campaigns.
    3. Assist in transit events outside of the office; may be outside regular office hours.

  4. Operations
    1. Monitor and evaluate contractor operations/employees.
    2. Remove/Replace bus stop signs or locations as needed.

  5. Public Information
    1. Submit/update transit related social media posts.
    2. Prepare press releases and news items for transit.

  6. Performs all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices.
    1. Knows and follows department and city rules as well as sound work and safety practices in order to accomplish the job objectives and avoid injury or loss;
    2. Wears proper protective equipment when policy requires or conditions indicate a need exists and utilizes proper body mechanics and ergonomics while performing work;
    3. When potentially unsafe conditions are observed makes efforts to avoid or correct them if they are controllable and draws them to the attention of the responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely manner.

  7. Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions.
    1. Interacts regularly with others in the work unit, the public, vendors or across departments to exchange basic information as requested or as necessary to perform job duties;
    2. Occasionally interacts with others in the work unit, the public, vendors or across departments to exchange detailed and/or technical information where the ability to explain concepts is exercised.

  8. Performs other duties and activities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
The job requires a high school diploma or G.E.D. and a valid driver’s license or evidence of equivalent mobility is also required.

Knowledge, skills, and ability include:
  • Knowledge of the transit system;
  • Knowledge of research methods and accounting;
  • Knowledge of general computer software;
  • Ability to manage projects and understand procurement;
  • Skill in organization and statistics;
  • Skill in developing and interpreting data;
  • Skill in performing mathematical computations such as algebraic functions;
  • Skill in communication and interpersonal skills as applies to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, etc., sufficient to exchange or convey information, resolve disputes, and receive work direction.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions:
Work is performed in a normal office environment and performed in the field. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in the office and moderate in the field. Daily work often involves moving between buildings and rooms while in the office and driving a company vehicle and light exertion while working in the field. Activities the incumbent must perform include digital dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, lifting, and using repetitive motions.

Driving is required while working in the field. The job may involve dealing with and calming individuals who are emotionally charged over an issue. There is considerable attention to detail and deadlines. 

This job is rated for Medium Work, Physical demands are normally those associated with medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 pounds of force regularly or constantly.
